Just for fun, wanted to see how people thought at this point. I think Dems will win both House and Senate, because I think that there's enough anger amongst rank and file Americans who don't vote to get them out to vote this time, and I think that will turn the tide in a number of states, including Texas, yes, I predict a Beto O'Rourke win there.

Hope you're right, then we can work on reforming the Democratic party, if it's possible. Otherwise the next time the independents will take the majorities everywhere.

Perfect example......... both are Democrats..........they are polar opposites

as people on this biard and others know, when you're confused just go with my view.  I am always right, except when I'm not.  And, then I am usually proven right anyway.  Dems win house and lose a couple seats in the senate.

GOPers keep the Senate and despite aspirations by Dems, GOPers also keep the House by slim majority. And Beto only wishes he could beat Ted Cruz in Texas. The only caveat would be: if my political picks mirror my football picks, ignore everything I just predicted.

With regard to the topic of the thread, i just dont know.  I gut feeling is that the Senate Will wither end up a 50-50 tie or the Republicans will retain the one or two seat majority.  The House is anyone’s call.

Yeah that "let Trump burn the place down" plan has worked out great hasn't it?

yes, it has. You may have realized by this point--or maybe not--that the Presidency itself is not the be-all end-all. THe most popular president in the past 20 years couldn't even get a nominee through the Senate.

The Presidency is full of swagger and power, but who has been governing America for the past generation--Presidents, or Republican majorities in Congress. I would say the latter, wouldn't you? Presidents can beg, cajole and demand, but, ultimately, it is Congress that decides. Harry Reid decided to whittle down Obama's first recovery plan from over a trillion to 800B. He also decided to pull the public option from the ACA. What could Obama do?

Now, imagine your heroine had won the election. Oh, to be sure, we wouldn't have the drumbeat against immigration that we have right now. We wouldn't have people complaining that Roe is under attack (though, frankly, I highly doubt that SCOTUS will ever take that on--it is a third rail). But I guarantee you that Hillary's nominees would have no been no better than Gorsuch or Kavanaugh when it came to the most critical role of SCOTUS in America today: deciding political economy issues.

What would Hillary have been able to get through this Republican Congress, jackie? A hell of a lot less than Obama did, and, I expect, a hell of a lot less than Bernie would have been able to, because electing Bernie would have represented a mandate that even Republicans, at least initially, wouldn't have been able to ignore. Do you think that Hillary would have had had a honeymoon in that Republican Congress? Answer that honestly, please, or not at all.

Now, take a look at the upcoming midterms, with Republicans ALREADY in control, and with fewer Republican seats at stake than Dems. Do you think that Dems would be looking forward to taking at least the House and maybe, with a bit of luck, the Senate as well? Or do you think they'd be estimating the number of seats they were going to lose, with the more timorous amongst them running as far to the right as they thought they could get away with.

Less consideration for optics, jackie, and more consideration for political reality, would be in order in your case.

Except for the fact that you DON'T have a right to healthcare, or safety, or a 'fair' wage, you're 100% correct.

And that would be according to whom, skrumpie? You? You are welcome to make the arguments, if you could (highly doubtful) as to why these things SHOULDN'T be rights, but you are hardly in a position to state affirmatively that they are NOT rights, when that nebulous concept depends initially on individual decision and ultimately collective choice as to what are and what aren't rights.

You are deluding yourself, mickey.  Or you're strongly in denial out of sheer embarrassment.  (if not, you should be).

Trump and Trumpism have been nothing short of disastrous for this country,  I fear to a point of no return, at least not for decades.  How long did it take Germany (and those areas of Europe he destroyed) to recover from Hitler and his nazi servants?  There's your guidepost.

He has also been disastrous for the entire world in acting as Putin's handmaid, fulfilling HIS agenda of making our allies our enemies.

Consider climate change.  Trump is rolling back as many environmental protections as possible; started with withdrawing from the Paris Accords, moved right on to re-polluting our air and water.   With climate apocalypse staring us in the face, all this political noise (the planned destruction of public education, healthcare, social services, on and on..) could be entirely moot in a very short time.  It has already begun.  Climate hoax?  Really?

But  go ahead and tell yourself you envisioned a genius plan; destroy the village to save the village.  Do you have your third party mid term candidates picked out?

The economy, health care and foreign affairs would have been just as terrible. As mickey suggests, and can be extrapolated from ........ Excuse me, and what happened to those "natural rights" you people are always blathering about, and which have always, by your own side, been seen to trump the Constitution: hence the usual defense of secession, that it hearkens to the DOI that we are "endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these" (but clearly by the use of that preposition, not limited to) "life, libery and the pursuit and happiness".

However, if you do want to play with the Constitution, I am MORE than happy to point to the general welfare clause, which means that Congress has the right to create rights that it considers both necessary and appropriate to the general welfare of these United States.

Either way, skrumpie, you lose.

jackie, again, blathering about how bad Trump looks, or how the world is going to burn to a cinder tomorrow, are meaningless. How, specifically, other than being more graceful than Trump as a puppet of the 1%, would Hillary have significantly improved this country, and, more important, do you believe at this point Democrats would be looking at taking either House of Congress?

Cuz I didn't see health insurance paid for by others, personal safety of an everyday variety,  or any mention of wages in there.

But since you mention the General Welfare clause and tell us that congress has the power to 'create' rights, then it follows that congress has also the right to abolish what was created prior.

YOU make the mistake , willingly, that all leftists do and that is the distortion of the GENERAL WELFARE clause to somehow equate with GOVERNMENT RUN PROGRAMS and that is just nonsense.

"...The fact that the framers followed up the general welfare clause in Article I Sec. 8 with specific enumerated powers indicates the latter – a qualification on federal authority. If they had intended Congress should have the power to do virtually anything and everything to promote the general welfare, they wouldn’t have bothered to include specific powers...."
