Good Day FSA Members!

I have been away for a while, traveling the world and doing a little spiritual questing! I return to see FSA has degenerated into further ill health due to the lack of mature self-policing by you and lack of oversight by me. The disruptive transition to new ownership of Aimoo and the subsequent migration of a number of members to a new forum didn't help.

I had, at one point, decided to just leave things go (the alternative being to just abandon the whole thing). But FSA has a history of adversity and somehow recovering and living on. The legacy of Jefferson (our founder in the old MSN forum), Sam B, Karmapolice, and Thomas deserves more than that from me and I shall endeavor to give it another shot. That said, I will still employ a laissez faire style of managing things and let you all pretty much have your way.

I would like each of you to review the following guidelines and feel free to comment, criticize, complain, compliment (yeah, right!), all you like. I will happily take those into consideration in crafting whatever rules I choose to employ. But remember this: FSA is mine and this is not a democratic undertaking. I interpret and enforce rules as I see fit, or don't -- my call. I will be fair according to my version and my say is final. If you cannot handle that you are free to depart. If you cause undue disruption I will arrange your departure myself.

No gratuitous personal attacks.

No racially offensive language.

No "C" word.

No large cut and paste posts. Learn how to copy a link or don't bother.

No re-doing member nicknames in an offensive or vulgar way.

I think that will do for now.

Have a nice day!

OK BONES then read the ENTIRE Thread:This board is being made horrible by wale ...

Also , if you like, we can begin a thread where we just post EXAMPLES of what THOSE who are the first to complain are

guilty of themselves, MANY times INITIATING the responses you don't want posted. So those who COMPLAIN, do NOT follow these guidelines also.

The THREAD can be called :

HEY BONES, Check THESE out.

Hey Nate -- Just getting my head straight after a long period of all work and no play. I did come to some happy realizations regarding friendships and other important things. Mostly personal stuff that wouldn't make for interesting reading though!

Hey Skrump -- I took a trip to Thailand and visited some old friends as well as made a couple of new ones! I was able to enjoy a cajun-style Thanksgiving feast (never had crawfish for the holiday meal before!) in Bangkok and also participated in the Thai festival of Loy Kratong. Went to a Buddhist temple and made several offerings including 2 that consisted of lotus-shaped disks (made from cut banana leaves on styrofoam) with orchids on them, some incense and a candle. I added a little money for luck and, after lighting them, set them to float down the canal (klong) beside the temple. Since just about everyone in Thailand was doing the same thing that night nearly every body of water in the country was lit up with little dots of light! Lots of merry-making with music, dance, and plenty of food! I also took a few days to hit the beach and get in a couple of swims and spend a few moments of peace by the shore. Very restful and I sure needed it. I met a Brit who had never done the tourist thing so we got a small group of mostly locals and went to the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Incredible experience all the way!

Thailand for Cajun? That made me chuckle. Not been there. I really should look more towards Asia on trips. Gotta talk to the honey. My vote doesn't count for much. But, Thailand, India, maybe Vietnam. gonna look for 2 - 3 week trips.

Welcome back guy.  You have been missed.  I am pleased to hear that your travels were beneficial to you.  I believe we all need to take time for serious self-evaluation and soul searching.  And we each have those special places or regions of the wotld where we feel most comfortable iin that journey of self-discovery.  For me it is the well kept secret and jewel of the Mediterranean- Malta.

Yes, it has been a rough time for FSA, thanks in no small measure to the insanity associated with the sale of Aimoo to the Chinese Bandits.  Only those LSU alums of a certain age will grasp the significance of the term “Chinese Bandits”.  And then compounded by the total absence of any type of board leadership.

I also have been largely absent for over one year.  Although my absence has been the result of a combination of health reasons, Becky and my retirements, and our transatlantic relocation.

Bones, your guidelines are simple, but can be effective if we all elect to adhere to those guidelines.  And rhey are really bothing more complicated than guidlines for common decency.  And they represent a pathway to both a vibrant, and yet a meaningful political discourse.

Drink wine. This is life eternal. This is all that youth will give you. It is the season for wine, roses and drunken friends. Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.” ,From the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

bones1776, I’m glad to see your nic, again! Been gone for quite a while myself, life happens.....so it’s such a relief to see familiar nics still posting. SamB from msn miss him.....thread titles aren’t what they used to be, but I can’t imagine how hard it was to keep them in line. At the time, I really hated it......lol....don’t be touching my precious words...... Sorry that FSA is yours, not that your rules will send me to another forum, but that I think of FSA as mine. Mine! I love the minds at work here, even when they’re being totally obnoxious, sometimes they’re kind and helpful. Scrolling by what I don’t like in favor of the little nuggets of golden, have to google that moments, is part of the joy. Another, is the absolute freedom to be honest, without having a family or friend feud over how I really think of what they’re forcing on folks around when their own lives are ...... not to be envied. I don’t think anyone welcomed me back, so good for you! My topics of interest usually flow down the screen and off into page infinity, but that’s as it should be when there’s no interest......actually, it’s sometimes frightening to have a nic reply.....lol

Glad for you that were able to get away and regroup Bones.  Nothing so restorative as travel, physically, mentally, spiritually. Even bad trips, full of mishaps or missed connections are fodder for mind.  Appreciate your attachment to the history of this ever shifting board, which could be thought of almost as an institution. (!)  Happy you've decided not to abandon FSA, lord knows few would have found fault with that decision.

Jefferson wasn't posting when I joined during the Bush/Gore election crisis, motivated to find analysis and opinions by people such as myself, rather than MSM.  Sam had just taken the board over.  You were "DocT".  So many colorful characters, as a then-liberal and just graduated UCLA alumnus, some of their opinions shocked and infuriated me.  Though there was a mix, forum was then right-leaning though by no means overwhelmingly so.

Nickel, I recall the thread title rule too (Identify topic clearly).  Also, 'politics' was narrowly defined, and woe betide members who posted frivolities about say, a celebrity scandal on general board.  He was, as he admitted, ultra-orderly and disciplined by nature and habit, of German stock I believe - not to stereotype, lol.  Under that set of rules, almost the entire membership in here would have been long gone.

So, by contrast, rules you've listed don't seem overly constraining, Bones.  It's probably the first one that's most subject to subjective ambiguity and contention.  Some people are snowflakes others hard as nails.  "Gratuitous" or no arguments usually deteriorate into "but they hit me first" squabbles by aggrieved parties.  "Personal" also is contested - some members believe if the term "mentally ill liberals" (plural) is used, and they've publicly self identified as liberal by extension it's personal. Therefore, retorting "And you're an imbecile" in their minds is only responding in kind. Hitting back. And so it goes.

To me, a "personal attack" is unambiguously ... personal.  A low blow specifically tailored and directed at member, of no substance or relevance to discussion.  An example might be (don't think he'll mind illustrative use) deriding Literate Easyman for his occupation.  Anyhoo getting all lawyerly about this is a waste of time.  Most people know when they're over a line.  And as you've said, Bones you are the arbiter.  I am confident in your sensibilities and judgement.
