Why I Support the BDS Movement Against Israel

"Gaza, a year after Israel carried out a devastating bombing campaign that lasted almost two months, is in ruins," writes Hedges. (Photo: Agencia de Noticias/flickr/cc)

The Palestinians are poor. They are powerless. They have no voice or influence in the halls of power. They are demonized. They do not have well-heeled lobbyists doling out campaign contributions and pushing through pro-Palestinian legislation. No presidential candidate is appealing to donors—as Hillary Clinton did when she sent a letter to media mogul Haim Saban denouncing critics of Israel—by promising to advance the interests of the Palestinian people. Palestinians, like poor people of color in the United States, are expendable.

Justice for Palestine will never come from the traditional governmental institutions or political parties that administer power. These institutions have surrendered to moneyed interests. Justice will come only from us. And the sole mechanism left to ensure justice for Palestine is the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel. Sanctions brought down the apartheid regime of South Africa. And they are what will bring down the apartheid regime of Israel. BDS is nonviolent. It appeals to conscience. And it works.

The struggle against apartheid in South Africa was long and hard. This struggle will be too.All Israeli products including Jaffa citrus fruits, Ahava cosmetics, SodaStream drink machines, Eden Springs bottled water and Israeli wine must be boycotted. We must refuse to do business with Israeli service companies. And we must boycott corporations that do business with Israel, including Caterpillar, HP and Hyundai. We must put pressure on institutions, from churches to universities, to divest from Israeli companies and corporations that have contracts with Israel. The struggle against apartheid in South Africa was long and hard. This struggle will be too.

Gaza, a year after Israel carried out a devastating bombing campaign that lasted almost two months, is in ruins. Most of the water is unsafe to drink. There are power outages for up to 12 hours a day. Forty percent of the 1.8 million inhabitants are unemployed, including 67 percent of the youths—the highest youth unemployment rate in the world. Of the 17,000 homes destroyed by Israel in the siege, not one has been rebuilt. Sixty thousand people remain homeless. Only a quarter of the promised $3.5 billion in aid from international donors has been delivered—much of it diverted to the Palestinian Authority, the Israeli puppet regime that governs the West Bank. And no one in Washington—Republican or Democrat—will defy the Israel lobby. No one will call for justice or stay the Israeli killing machine. U.S. senators, including Bernie Sanders, at the height of the Israeli bombardment last summer voted unanimously to defend the Israeli slaughter of a people with no army, navy, air force, mechanized units, artillery or command and control. It was a vote worthy of the old Soviet Union. Every senator held out his or her tin cup to the Israel lobby and chose naked self-interest over justice.

Israel, like the United States, is poisoned by the psychosis of permanent war. It too is governed by a corrupt oligarchic elite for whom war has become a lucrative business.

Israel, like the United States, is poisoned by the psychosis of permanent war. It too is governed by a corrupt oligarchic elite for whom war has become a lucrative business. It too has deluded itself into carrying out war crimes and then playing the role of the victim. Israeli systems of education and the press—again mirrored in the United States—have indoctrinated Israelis into believing that they have a right to kill anyone whom the state condemns as a terrorist. And Israel’s most courageous human rights campaigners, intellectuals and journalists are slandered and censored in their own country, just as American critics such as Norman FinkelsteinMax Blumenthal and Noam Chomsky are in the United States.

Those who become addicted to the wielding of the instruments of war, blinded by hubris and a lust for power, eventually become war’s victims. This is as true for Israel as for the United States.

Israel’s goal is to make life a living hell for all Palestinians, ethnically cleansing as many as it can and subduing those who remain. The peace process is a sham. It has led to Israel’s seizure of more than half the land on the West Bank, including the aquifers, and the herding of Palestinians into squalid, ringed ghettos or Bantustans while turning Palestinian land and homes over to Jewish settlers. Israel is expanding settlements, especially in East Jerusalem. Racial laws, once championed by the right-wing demagogue Meir Kahane, openly discriminate against Israeli Arabs and Palestinians. Ilan Pappe calls the decades-long assault against the Palestinian people “incremental genocide.”

In Gaza, Israel practices an even more extreme form of cruelty. It employs a mathematical formula to limit outside food deliveries to Gaza to keep the caloric levels of the 1.8 million Palestinians just above starvation. This has left 80 percent of the Palestinians in Gaza dependent on Islamic charities and outside aid to survive. And the periodic military assaults on Gaza, euphemistically called “mowing the lawn,” are carried out every few years to ensure that the Palestinians remain broken, terrified and destitute. There have been three Israeli attacks on Gaza since 2008. Each is more violent and indiscriminate than the last. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has said that a fourth attack on Gaza is “inevitable.”

Israel is not an anomaly. It is a window into the dystopian, militarized world that is being prepared for all of us, a world with vast disparities of income and draconian systems of internal security. There will be no freedom for Palestine, or for those locked in our own internal colonies and terrorized by indiscriminate police violence, until we destroy corporate capitalism and the neoliberal ideology that sustains it.

During its 51-day siege of Gaza last summer Israel dropped $370 million in ordinance on concrete hovels and refugee camps that hold the most densely packed population on the planet. Two thousand one hundred four Palestinians were killed. Sixty-nine percent—1,462—were civilians. Four hundred ninety-five were children. Ten thousand were injured. (During the attack six Israeli civilians and 66 soldiers were killed.) Four hundred Palestinian businesses were wiped out. Seventy mosques were destroyed and 130 were damaged. Twenty-four medical facilities were bombed, and 16 ambulances were struck, as was Gaza’s only electrical power plant. Israel tallied it up: 390,000 tank shells, 34,000 artillery shells, 4.8 million bullets. Most of the civilians who died were killed in their homes, many of the victims torn to shreds by flechette dartssprayed from tanks. Children were burned with white phosphorous or buried with their families under rubble caused by 2,000-pound iron fragmentation bombs. Others died from dense inert metal explosive, or DIME, bombs—experimental weapons that send out extremely small, carcinogenic particles that cut through both soft tissue and bone. The Israel Defense Forces, as Amira Hass has reported, consider any Palestinian over the age of 12 to be a legitimate military target. Max Blumenthal’s new book, “The 51 Day War,” is a chilling chronicle of savage atrocities carried out by Israel in Gaza last summer. As horrible as the apartheid state in South Africa was, that nation never used its air force and heavy artillery to bomb and shell black townships.

A report by Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) found Israel killed and injured more civilians with explosive weapons in 2014 than any other country in the world. Hamas’ indiscriminate firing of wildly inaccurate missiles—Finkelstein correctly called them “enhanced fireworks”—into Israel was, as a U.N. report recently charged, a war crime, although the report failed to note that under international law Hamas had a right to use force to defend itself from attack.

The disparity of firepower in the 2014 conflict was vast: Israel dropped 20,000 tons of explosives on Gaza while Hamas used 20 to 40 tons of explosives to retaliate. Israel’s wholesale slaughter of civilians is on a scale equaled only by Islamic State and Boko Haram. Yet Israel, in our world of double standards, is exempted from condemnation in Washington and provided with weapons and billions in U.S. foreign aid to perpetuate the killing. This is not surprising. The United States uses indiscriminate deadly force in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia that outdoes even Israel, leaving behind civilian victims, refugees and destroyed cities and villages in huge numbers.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who during his last election campaign received 90 percent of his money from U.S. oligarchs such as Sheldon Adelson, has internally mounted a campaign of state repression against human rights advocates, journalists and dissidents. He has stoked overt racism toward Palestinians and Arabs and the African migrant workers who live in the slums of Tel Aviv. “Death to Arabs” is a popular chant at Israeli soccer matches. Thugs from right-wing youth groups such as Im Tirtzu routinely beat up dissidents, Palestinians, Israeli Arabs and African immigrants in the streets of Tel Aviv. It is a species of Jewish fascism.

There will be no justice for Michael Brown until there is justice for Mohammed Abu Khdeir. The fight for the Palestinians is our fight. If the Palestinians are not liberated none of us will be liberated. We cannot pick and choose which of the oppressed are convenient or inconvenient to defend. We will stand with all of the oppressed or none of the oppressed. And when we stand with the oppressed we will be treated like the oppressed.

Oh, I must be mistaken...........please help me understand, how does what you said coincide with the highlighted portion?

Eric Resnick, a Jewish-American protester from Canton, Ohio who lost family in the Holocaust, told Al Jazeera "my family did not die to justify what these sick Zionists are doing to Palestine".

His sentiment was supported by Rabbi Yisroel Weiss of Jews United against Zionism.

You must have some sort of "new" thinking, so share your brilliance with us all.

Maybe he is, maybe he isn't but I don't think it takes an "anti-semite" to figure out what is going on and who has all the power. When one side has nukes and the others rocks, one side controls your air space, water, electricity, movement and ownership, you kinda know where it is going, see French Revolution, Russian Revolution and our own revolution. What makes anyone think another group is going to tolerate it, when we and those who have gone before, have not?

Did Sir David Attenborough say the following about Israelis? From Israel has lost both the battle and the war (Wikipedia article on Arab News), but the quote has been circulating elsewhere as well:

I am unaware of any animal that is as cruel as Israelis— not even crocodiles. They bomb schools, hospitals, refugee camps, orphanages, UN feeding stations, water works, power plants, ambulances, kids playing on the beach. They put millions of people in a siege. They shoot children going to school. They kidnap kids and harvest their organs. They inject prisoners with disease pathogens before releasing them. They murder by land, sea and air and worst of all, they slander their defenseless victims as ‘terrorists’.

An anonymous person wrote a comment on July 21, 2014 on PressTV.ir that uses David Attenborough name. That comment was strongly upvoted and people made Facebook memes out of it.

Given that social media activity the Arab News took it as fact for their article on August 8, 2014.

The blog Toxic Drums analyses the case in more detail.

Anyone could have written that comment and there's no reason to believe that it was David Attenborough. If David Attenborough wanted to say something on the issue the 88 year old would likely write an OPed in a newspaper instead of commenting on an Iranian news website.

Trump Administration Ramps Up Threats Against Iran

Marjorie Cohn, Truthout: The US, Saudi Arabia and Israel are unified in their hatred of Iran, albeit for different reasons. Now White House officials are worried that the alleged torture, murder and dismemberment of journalist Jamal Khashoggi could interfere with Trump's plans to escalate aggression against Iran and stymie Saudi cooperation to avoid disruption of the global oil market.

..... Israel is the only remotely civilized nation in the middle east, a tiny island of civilization in a sea of barbarians... perhaps too civilized as the human tradition is that conquerors usually slaughter the conquered and Israel has refused to do so.

Israel is a refuge for the Jews.  It is a shelter against people like the local muslims and like yourself, who would prefer them wiped off the face of the earth.

And it's fine that you feel that way.  It's stupid, but it's your right.  Meanwhile, the Jews are aware of the intentions of folks like yourself and the local muslims.

Even without our aide, Israel is a match for all it's enemies in the region.  They will fight to the death to defend themselves and there really is nothing at all you can do about that.

Exactly

And they are doing more to ward off desertification, a real threat to human existence, than any other nation.

Hmm, for a while there I thought you were smarter than to say such things. The government of Israel and our government as well, seem to be the true barbarians. "Sea of barbarians" around Israel? That's an obscene joke and you should be ashamed to utter it. The barbarians are the right wing rulers of Israel, the Mossad and the IDF working hand in hand with the U.S.

Do you get that, after decades of your postings like the above, you are convincing exactly nobody of anything?

John Pilger

individualLast updated: October 31, 2018

Overview

  • Australian journalist and documentary-maker
  • Critic of Israel and the United States
  • Praised Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and the Marxist Sandinistas of Nicaragua
  • Said that American, British, and Australian troops in Iraq are “legitimate targets” for killers because “they’re illegally occupying a country.”

Born on October 9, 1939 in Bondi, Australia, John Pilger is a journalist, author, and documentary producer. Both of his parents were socialists, his father a member of the Industrial Workers of the World.

Pilger’s interest in journalism began when he was enrolled at Sydney Boys High School, where he founded the student newspaper, the Messenger. He later completed a four-year cadetship with Australian Consolidated Press. From 1958-2014, Pilger held numerous jobs as a writer, editor, and correspondent for a variety of publications and news outlets.
Pilger’s perspective in his writings and his documentaries is relentlessly anti-American, anti-capitalist, anti-Israel and pro-Arab.

In February 2001 Pilger portrayed the United States as the longtime overseer of “geopolitical fascism.” Three months later, he described Israel as a “terrorist state” with “a policy of state murder.”

Two days after 9/11, Pilger wrote that “Islamic peoples” worldwide had long been the “victims” of “U.S. fundamentalism,” “whose power, in all its forms,” represented “the greatest source of terrorism on earth.” That same fall, Pilger depicted America’s war-on-terror as a “fraud,” accusing the U.S. of committing needless atrocities against innocent Afghan peasants.

In August 2003 Pilger characterized the detention facilities in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba as “concentration camps” where “there are no human rights, no recognizable rule of law, no justice.” That same month, he portrayed U.S. and British soldiers in Iraq as “death squads” complicit in “a great recognized crime” that had “brought down on the Middle East, and much of the rest of the world, the prospect of terrorism and suffering on a scale that al-Qaeda could only imagine.”

In a March 2004 interview, Pilger was asked if he approved of “the killing of American, British or Australian troops” by their enemies in Iraq. He replied: “Well yes, they’re legitimate targets. They’re illegally occupying a country.” Writing that he had “seldom felt as safe in any country” as when visiting Saddam Hussein’s Iraq prior to the war, Pilger in April 2004 again voiced support for the Iraqi resistance on the grounds that “we can’t afford to be choosy” in acquiring allies against the U.S.-led coalition. In an October 2004 interview, Pilger confirmed his hope that America would be “defeated militarily” in Iraq because “unless the United States is defeated there … we’re likely to [also] see an attack on Iran [and] North Korea and … even … China within a decade.”

Blaming the West for the rise of Islamic terrorism, Pilger in 2005 wrote that the explosives used in the deadly July 7th jihadist attacks against London’s public transport system “were [Prime Minister Tony] Blair’s bombs” because “Blair brought home to this country his and George W. Bush’s illegal, unprovoked and blood-soaked adventure in the Middle East” – an act of “epic irresponsibility” which the London killings were intended to avenge.

Accusing the West of blindly supporting Israel while disregarding the needs of Arab and Muslim nations, Pilger in July 2007 said that “Israel is the American watchdog in the Middle East, and that’s why the Palestinians remain victims of one of the longest military occupations.” “[U]ntil there is justice for the Palestinians,” he added, “there will never be any kind of stability in the Middle East.” In 2008, Pilger became an advisory board member with the Free Gaza Movement, a pro-Hamas initiative.

During that same general time period, Pilger was an avid admirer of Venezuela’s then-president, Hugo Chávez, a communist despot who, by Pilger’s telling, had demonstrated “an alternative way of developing a decent society” that stood in stark contrast to the “Washington-designed peonage” that had long inflicted great suffering on “the majority of humanity.”

Among the more noteworthy documentary films which Pilger has produced are the following:

Vietnam: The Quiet Mutiny (1970) explores the profound “disaffection” allegedly experienced by many American soldiers because of how they were mistreated and exploited by their commanding officers. In 1974 Pilger released Vietnam: Still America’s War, about “the continuing and growing and forgotten suffering of the Vietnamese people.” And Vietnam: The Last Battle (1995) condemns the long-term “economic plunder of [Vietnam] by the United States and other powerful countries.”

Nicaragua: A Nation’s Right to Survive (1983) offers a sympathetic portrayal of the communist Sandinistas backed by Fidel Castro – a man whose own communist revolution represented, in Pilger’s calculus, “a crucial model for challenging power” – while depicting the Nicaraguan peasants who opposed them as murderous devils.

Paying the Price: Killing the Children of Iraq (2000) castigates America for imposing economic sanctions on Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.

The New Rulers of the World (2001) laments “the true effects of globalization” and American “imperialism” – i.e., a world where “the rich get richer on the backs of the poor.”

Palestine Is Still the Issue (2002) denounces Israel for using what Pilger calls its “huge military regime” to inflict “routine terror” on the “stateless and humiliated” Palestinian people, thereby effectively leaving them no choice but to commit “desperate acts of terror, like suicide bombing.”

Breaking The Silence: Truth And Lies In The War On Terror (2003) depicts America’s post-9/11 anti-terrorism measures as “part of an opened-ended war for global dominance and control of valuable oil resources in the Middle East.” Americans, says Pilger, with their “rapacious” desire for “imperial power,” are the world’s “most threatening terrorists,” guilty of “far greater acts of violence than those committed by the fanatics of al-Qaeda.”

The War On Democracy (2007) celebrates not only the “rise of populist governments across South America [led] by indigenous leaders intent on loosening the shackles of Washington,” but also what Pilger calls “the struggle of people to free themselves from a modern form of slavery” stemming from an American “war being waged against all of us.”

The Coming War on China (2016) argues that central planning is preferable to free-market capitalism; that Mao Zedong was a hero who courageously led the resistance against foreign influence in China (his mass murders are never mentioned); and that the warmongering U.S. constitutes the greatest threat to peace that the world has ever known.
