I don’t bother read anything that has Trump in the title.

He will probably win a second term.

Seems to me voters are unhappy with the lesser of two evils, figuring out which is which, and have just decided to simply sway back and forth between the Democrats and Republicans every eight years and hope for something in the middle to emerge overall that doesn’t ruin the country.  Being ever vigilant is too hard.

All political parties are coalitions; you wouldn't try to convince the world that all the members of either party have the same objectives.

As I was trying to say, the electoral college was set up to prevent the masses from having much say in how they and their country are governed.

NO, the ELECTORAL COLLEGE was set up to 'equalize' the larger populated areas/states and the smaller ones. ALL part of proportional representation, so the larget areas would not dominate and yopu'd have three or four states always making the decisions.

That may have been it's original intent, but as it is operated today, the Electoral College essentially does what Yobbo says it does.

Not because you say it or agree with his errors. it still makes it important for candidates to pay as much attention to smaller states as well as the large ones when seeking office.

No matter what the Electoral College design intended, it has the ability to steal the Presidency from the people, and it has in recent memory done just that....Gore....Clinton ......were robbed. Time to fix that obfuscation of We, the People.

And I'm tired of the arguments about it protecting the less populous states. That's bullshit. They are already protected with disproportionate representation in Congress--both the Senate, where each state gets two senators, and the House, where each state gets at least one representative. Why should the votes of some voters in some states count more than those from other states? That's ridiculous. We need to get rid of the Electoral College, which was designed to protect slavery and the interests of slaveowners.

Ok, I'll explain it so even YOU can understand. WE are NOT a democracy with DIRECT voting by the populous. WE are a REPUBLIC where we vote for representatives and THEY then vote on various issues, measures etc. The REPRESENTATIVES stand in for the citizen body. The electoral college follows that model AND eliminates the problem of a few HEAVILLY POPULATED states deciding ALL the issues for the rest of the country.

And I'll explain it to you-- the Electoral College has long outlived its usefulness and there is no legitimate reason to keep it. And there is nothing in us being a republic that requires we keep it, either. What a specious argument that they would decide all the issues for the rest of the country. One man, one vote to pick the President doesn't change what the legislature does at all. There is no reason underpopulated states should have MORE representation in the executive as well as the legislative branch. None.

Who cares about our purposefully vague founders? They expected us to change their fails into a success. All men are created equal.....they didn’t read that the same way we do. We’ve corrected many of their errors, grown better over time. Might as well have Congress decide the next president if the Republic is all we are, or the state legislatures. Why bother the people with the hoax of an election? Every vote should count. Under the current system, huge swaths of them are ignored.

I simply illustrated one shortcoming of a majority of the founding fathers.  And if they were deficient on this then their reasons for having the electoral college must be carefully examined.  And dumped.

As a republic, the states lead the federal government. They are why Prohibition existed and subsequently failed. The states are also why we have laws against drugs which by enhancing the black market have killed or ruined so many more lives directly and indirectly. The states forgot the most important lesson of Prohibition. Politicians are adept at stepping to the front of parades, so when enough states pass laws for or against something, Congress sees a way to please the public and goes for it, even when it’s not in the public’s best interest. Drug related so-called crimes have filled the jails and brought forth an industry of private and public prisons. Can anyone in Congress who knows how this works be proud of their legacy? No, of course not! To be fair, the states have also dumped much of what used to be their responsibility onto the federal government where it is ineptly handled because of distance and one size not fitting all. Whining about unfunded mandates, the states blamed the federal government to hide their budget woes and then squandered the surplus resulting from the federal response. Thanks to California, senior citizens lost their homes in Idaho and across the country because of Prop 13. Even though the US Supreme Court found that it was in a community’s interest to maintain stability that purchase price be used, virtually all switched to estimated market assessment because of the windfall it produced for city governments. It was a few years before it was tweaked by home owners exemption and senior consideration that enabled them to keep their homes. Still bugs me that estimated market value exists, not to mention the stampede to user fees that can’t be deducted from state or federal tax returns, another one of California’s brilliant ideas.

Once again you reveal you do NOT understand as there is a PROSCRIBED way and the ELECTORAL COLLEGE is that way. It is NOT changed simply because you, and those like you, who are restless juveniles, simply want it to be changed just because you don't like something. There IS a reason that smaller states have a proportional representation in the voting, as two maybe three states might equal one big state, thereby equalizing that vote.
