I'll start: I'm still marveling at the 2014 performance of that Bumgarner kid. Do you realize that with his post-season innings he pitched 270 of them this year? Amazing, given what his contemporaries manage. I hope he stays healthy. I doubt that he will, what with those dangerous mechanics, but may he thrive for years to come. What a kid! What a pro!

Think Achilles facing the decision to go to Troy: is it better to survive, and be remembered just by those in the know, in life, friends and family, in baseball, the true fans, or is it better to go out in a blaze of glory.

I hope though he's all right for next year. When you consider how many players steal huge salaries and then do nothing, it would be a shame if someone who delivered like he did didn't get a payoff relative to his real contribution both on the field and to the history books.

And I mentioned in the now defunct thread that I had read a couple of Angell anthologies, POTP. But for my money, best baseball book I ever read (and buried somewhere in my library): Our Game.

Strongly recommended for all who enjoy the game.

Here's what I propose: acknowledge that a reliable record of our numbers for the first half are gone and just start over with Week 9. It seems like a natural enough break anyway. I think we should just ignore the Thursday-night game, too.

Anyway, here are my picks for this week (minus the Thursday game, of course):

Sun Nov 21:00 pm Arizona Cardinals Dallas Cowboys
1:00 pm Jacksonville Jaguars Cincinnati Bengals
1:00 pm New York Jets Kansas City Chiefs
1:00 pm Philadelphia Eagles Houston Texans
1:00 pm San Diego Chargers Miami Dolphins
1:00 pm Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cleveland Browns
1:00 pm Washington NFL Franchise Minnesota Vikings
4:05 pm St. Louis Rams San Francisco 49ers
4:25 pm Denver Broncos New England Patriots
4:25 pm Oakland Raiders Seattle Seahawks
8:30 pm Baltimore Ravens Pittsburgh Steelers
Mon Nov 38:30 pm Indianapolis Colts New York Giants

Patriots are looking very strong here at half time, while the Broncos look sloppy and ineffective.

And yes,  this makes me happy.

Yeah, now three games behind the cards with 7 to go, gonna be hard to get the division. Two games with Seattle coming up, even splitting them that means a minimum four losses. Harbaugh's gonna need a magic hat for this one.

In fact, if things pan out as I hope, both Harbaughs will be 5 - 4, Baltimore losing right now, even though the Steelers special teams gave up a td.

Steelers offense really looks like it's coming together. Big Ben, 5 tds today, no ints, 301 yards, he's killing it. Between Bell and Bryant, they have a strong one two punch. Just scored another td, now is 36 - 16, so game is all over but the crying pretty much, long 10 play td drive from the Steelers' twenty five.

A bit of trivia about Pittsburgh professional sports teams. All three teams - Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins have black and gold as rheir colors. The only city with two or more major pro franchises where all the teams do use the Sam colors.

lol. very cold. I'd be smug, except I really do think Colin is the real thing, and once things click for him, he'll be great.

volga, knew about the three colors, just checked on Pitt, they're navy blue and gold, guess we need to get up to speed with them.

But I do think it is cool in a way that all three majors have the same colors. It ties sports together in a way in that city, and reinforces support for each team, by all of them having the same colors, something unique to a small midwestern city with a strong sports tradition.

After watching the Giants sleep walk through the first 3 quarters tonight I'm actually disappointed with them. Coming off a bye, talking like they were going to put it together and come roaring back with hopes of taking the NFC East, then this? sheeeeeshhhhhh

POTP - 10 -3

mickey - 9 - 4

TP - 9 - 4 (we're alphabetical, TP ;-))

EZ 8 - 5

against the spread is harder, I was 7 - 6 and EZ 5 - 8, and I would definitely have lost money this week because my favs only panned out 2 & 2. Saints were actually dogs in that game, close enough so if you picked saints to cover, you picked them to win as well. Ditto with Washington (EZ and I both picked, both lost). Jville and Seattle Oakland were such large spreads though, that even though losing on it still it was expected that both Cleveland and Seattle would win.

Should be a very interesting game this Thursday, Cincy - Cleveland, if Cleveland wins I think they'll be 6 and 3 as well, tied with the Steelers for the lead (if cincy loses they drop to 5 - 3 - 1).

Personally, it seems to me that teams come out flat out of the bye, almost invariably. SF and the Giants both lost, be interesting to see how the bye teams from last week do this week. Seems to me that folks get tuned down a little bit, and then find it harder to rev back up when they do start playing again.

It might actually be better if, since every team has to play on a Thursday I think, at least once, that their byes should come immediately thereafter. Keep the edge on.

okay, just for myself, no-one else, I do like picking against the spread, for, as they say, amusement only. Got in the habit of picking against the PFW writers every week, they would have about twelve writers pick every week, and have a cumulative score.

It's about a 20% difference against straight up.

A "w" means I expect an outright win in addition to covering the spread.

That's all fine and dandy, but we need to make this a straight up pick the winner or we need to go with a posted spread and pick against the spread.

For example........you take Cleveland +6.5, you're hedging your bet. I pick Cincinnati to win no matter the score. But you take Cleveland +6.5 so you win as long as they don't lose by a TD or more, and you win if they win outright. It's fine but I think we need to be consistent. Straight up across the board or with the spread across the board

no. See above.

A "w" means I expect an outright win in addition to covering the spread.

so, tonight, I picked Cleveland to cover, so won there, but didn't expect a total collapse by cincy, so lost straight up. We're both 0-1 on the night. Titan is 1 - 0 and POTP didn't post.

We're not really in competition, we don't even have to have a formal score since I expect nobody will post every week. It's just fun to do it.

and google is just such a wonderful thing. I typed AFC North Standings into it, and this is how it comes up, top of page:

AFC Northern Division

well, actually I had to a little cutting, since when I copied the four above, the WHOLE league copied. But this the only one with the logos, actually.

Notice where my Steelers are! Actually, the AFC North is the best division in football--it has 22 wins: no other division has even 20. Consistently, the AFC is one of the best divisions--teams like the Patriots can cut through weeds on their way to a division title, but any NFC north team has to hack it's through a forest to a division crown.
