I'll start: I'm still marveling at the 2014 performance of that Bumgarner kid. Do you realize that with his post-season innings he pitched 270 of them this year? Amazing, given what his contemporaries manage. I hope he stays healthy. I doubt that he will, what with those dangerous mechanics, but may he thrive for years to come. What a kid! What a pro!

I guess you haven't been watching St. Louis much lately aye mickey? The Rams, when they are on their defense is stellar. Today the Rams defense played great and Seattle offense was off a bit. But as we see, even with a good Ram defense playing great and the Seahawks offense playing a rare poor game............they win. That's what championship caliber teams do, they win, even when they are having an off day.

Your fantasy of The Cowboys vs The Steelers would be fun to see. But I think the (by your accounts) underestimated Ravens defense and QB Flacco will dash your hopes. N.E. or Denver will stop the Steelers if the Ravens don't. Green Bay will stop Dallas if Detroit doesn't do it first.

All things considered I think G.B.,Seattle and Detroit look like probable NFC participants.

N.E., Denver and Baltimore look like probable AFC participants.

I just don't think either Dallas or Pittsburgh has the defense to go all the way. Plus Rothlesburger and Romo are too hot and cold.

The favorites here should be the Cowboys and the Seahawks for the NFC title with an eye open for the Carolina Panthers.

Detroit travels to Dallas, the Lions are a good team but erratic, double cover Megatron and you've basically stopped the Lion's offense, Stafford has a good arm but he's on and off, sporatic with his accuracy. Dallas defense not overwhelming but playing respectable, their offense lighting up the scoreboard. The Cowboys eliminate the Lions from the playoffs.

And with Aaron Rogers barely able to limp along, Dallas should have a nice blitz package to put some real heat on Rogers, the weather won't be a factor, the Packers fall to Dallas and exit the playoffs. That sets up a Dallas-Seattle rematch for the NFC title. The Cowboys already beat Seattle once this year...they'll do it again.

Watch out for the Carolina Panthers, Cam Newton is making a difference in their offense again and the Panther defense is awakening. They could be the spoiler against the Seahawks.

Pittsburgh...just not enough juice to make it to the big dance, I think they got lucky against Cincy, a very tight game until Cincy shot themselves in the foot several times with interceptions (poorly thrown passes by Dalton) and fumbles. And what the hell was that all about...the Steelers going for it on 4th down, nine yards for a first down and close to the 50 yard line with loads of time still left on the clock? They got damn lucky the Bengals fumbled the ball back to them. And with coaching like that, you don't make it to the SB.

By virtue of their record, their quarterback (Tom Brady) and their homefield advantage, the nod has to go to the Patriots to win the AFC title.

After that, they play the Cowboys for all the marbles.

Oh, and kudos to the Niners. After a thoroughly disappointing season, they did manage to break even in the won-lost column. A small crumb of dignity for the off season.

stirring the pot is one thing, EZ. But at this point, you're just picking against Pittsburgh to see if you can rile me.

For me, I'm more interested in making serious picks.

When you're ready to do so, let me know. Otherwise, you're more interested in stamping your feet than talking about football.

well, it should be noted that they lost one of their troika. You can hardly expect to show the same offense as they did in the first half. Second, interceptions are part of the game. Ben threw one as well. Fumbles are part of the game as well. Blaming turnovers for why a team loses is like saying, "gosh, I'd have kicked that guy's ass if he hadn't kicked mine first."

I'll admit to being a bit biased in my pics. But of the AFC teams, the only two I'm really scared of are Indy, because I think Andrew Luck is pretty good, and of course NE because Tom Brady is Tom Brady--unlike Peyton, a winner. But I think NE is TOO dependent on Brady, moreso I think than any other team is dependent on their QB, so if Brady doesn't have a good game,
then NE is really in trouble.

That said, any given Sunday (or Saturday) does hold. But, logically, Baltimore has shown nothing this year that people should be picking them OVER the Steelers.

When you're ready to do so, let me know.

Well, I do have fun poking at you about the Steelers, all in good fun. Just a little trash talk. But seriously, what I said I do stand by. I'm a big believer in defense winning championships.

The Steelers , the Cowboys, the Packers and the Colts have the offensive weapons, but a good defense can shut any of them down. I believe the best defense will win this thing. The Ravens and the Seahawks only put up around 20 pts per game, but their defenses are capable of allowing less than 10.

So the Patriots, Denver and G.B. have good but not great defenses. On any given Sunday any of the teams in these playoffs could win if they bring their A-game and they don't make any mistakes.

A critical mistake can always turn any game on it's head.

hut, hut .... omaha!

Wow. Ndamukong Suh's one-game suspension has been rescinded; instead, he's fined $70,000 (chump change for him). I'm happy that he's gonna play because without him my boys stood even less chance than they do with him. They're still gonna lose, but at least now they still have a puncher's shot at victory.

Suh is a great player, but a real asshole on the field -- i.e., he's a really dirty player. Off the field, I have no idea what he's like;  in his interactions with the press, he comes across as soft-spoken, intelligent, and articulate, but that is no proof at all of non-assholery.

His little backward stroll over Aaron Rodgers's lower leg definitely merited a suspension: football playing surfaces are flat, and if your foot hits a bump, it must logically belong to another player's body. The film is unequivocal: he took his time lifting his foot off the "bump" he hit.

If -- miraculously -- the Lions defeat the Cowboys, I should probably feel a twinge of guilt, but since I'm already shedding a bit of my moral code just by watching football, I won't feel any worse about my habit.

For what they're worth, here are my picks for this weekend's games: Panthers, Cowboys, Colts, Steelers.

Playoff picks:

Baltimore @ Pittsburgh - Both won at home during the regular season, gotta go with Pittsburgh on this one

Cincy @ Indy - close game but the home team wins again. I'll take Indy on this one

Arizona @ Carolina - Cardinals have a good defense but their offense lacking. They won't stop Cam Newton and they won't score enough points to win...Carolina wins

Detroit @ Dallas - homefield advantage, defense playing respectable, offense in high gear...the football gods favor the Cowboys and so do I.

Hyperextended knee for Le'Veon. Not as bad as feared.

And only because I hate to end a page with pics, will c&p this to the next one...;-)

I actually think that Dallas has the chance to make hay in the playoffs. As I noted above, I don't think that Seattle's the cat's miaow, and I think that if Seattle has to play Dallas then again despite Seattle's defense, there will be sufficient Dallas points to offset that defense. So where Dallas might score 30 - 40 regularly, she'll score maybe 20 or so, and that is enough I think to beat a very lackluster Seattle offense.

So now we have the playoffs set. It really really sucks that an eleven win AZ team has to go to Carolina for their playoff game. That rule really has to be changed.

But, here it is:

Wildcards -

NFC - Lions at Dallas - I don't think the Lions can keep up with Tony Romo at home.
Arizona at Carolina - Arizona is toast.

AFC - Baltimore at Pittsburgh - Baltimore's defense isn't what it once was, and don't think Flacco is all that great.
Cincy at Indy - Andy Dalton is another Peyton Manning--choking if not skilled.

Divisional -

NFC - Carolina at Seattle - Put a spy on Cam and the game's essentially over.
Dallas at Green Bay - I know it may seem unlikely, but think Romo will rise to the challenge.

AFC - Pittsburgh at New England - Assuming Le'Veon is back. Otherwise NE.
Indy at Denver - Denver is relying to much on the running game, I think Andrew Luck wins.

Conference -

NFC - Dallas at Seattle - for reasons noted above.
AFC - Indy at Pittsburgh - Because they've already done so once, and should be able to contain Luck again.

Superbowl -

Pittsburgh vs. Dallas - Rome chokes at that point and the Steelers take home their 7th Trophy!

 Wildcard games:

Lions @ Cowboys. Dallas
Cardinals @ Panthers. Carolina
Ravens @ Steelers. Baltimore
Bengals @ Colts. Indy

Ultimately, Packers and Patriots will meet in Arizona. Neither the Cowboys or the Panthers will be able to win in the frozen tundra. The only challenge for the Packers before the SB will be the 12th man in Seattle. Nevertheless, very doable.

Before you write-off Seattle because they lost to Dallas earlier is a tad short sided.  Seattle was missing two impact players on defense.  At that time the defense was not playing well.  I think if Dallas does make it to Seattle and I think they will they will face a much different team than the first time. I also think that Arizona still has enough left to take out the panthers. But that is as far as they will get. The Steelers will be at home and will win against the Ravens.  Bengals at colts,  Who cares as the one that wins will lose the next week.  On super bowl Sunday you will be watching Seattle kick New England butt.

Everybody jumped on the Dallas bandwagon when they rolled over their last opponent.  I wasn't impressed as Dallas was playing against a High School defense. That has a tendency to make a QB look great.

I am rooting for the Steelers this week, and also the Seahawks because they are a great team and I love to watch them play at such a high level.

As much as I want to see my Patriots go all the way, I am NOT about to guarantee that they make it thru the playoffs.

Their is not one team left that is incapable of winning if the breaks go their way.  The best team does not always win. While I believe that Seattle is the best team left that does not mean an automatic super bowl win. It must be earned on the field.

OSU and Oregon, should be a barnburner with two high-powered offenses putting up a barrage of points on the scoreboard. Both teams have very capable quarterbacks and very capable of turning into formidable running backs on a moments notice. I think the scrambling abilities of these quarterbacks will make the difference in the game.

You could probably flip a coin and have just as good of a chance picking the winner in this one but I'm gonna go with Oregon in a close, high-powered shootout. Should be a great game.

I think Oregon has the edge in QB, so will go with them in the championship game.

Rex Ryan interviews with the Niners on Sunday. So far, the only interesting name...all the others are pretty low grade. It may have to be low grade considering the fact that they're essentially telling any contendors that they are there to coach the team only, don't expect to have a desk in the front office, and kiss Jed's ring (oh, that's right--he doesn't have one yet), whenever possible.
