I'll start: I'm still marveling at the 2014 performance of that Bumgarner kid. Do you realize that with his post-season innings he pitched 270 of them this year? Amazing, given what his contemporaries manage. I hope he stays healthy. I doubt that he will, what with those dangerous mechanics, but may he thrive for years to come. What a kid! What a pro!

LOL, OLK but there is always the 'competition' element, fun aspect not withstanding. Just like the trivia games, it's for fun but it's got a competitive aspect as well, that's part of the fun. I like either way on the NFL: games, I'm just saying we should do our picks against the spread or straight up.
Like Tennessee you picked, is that with 9.5 or do you pick them to win straight up? I'm a bit confused there.

C'est la vie

Oh yeah, what the hell happened with Cincinnati last night? The Browns played good, but it's like the Bengals all took 50mg of valium before the game. lol weird to say the least!

11/9 1:00 ET At Baltimore -9.5 Tennessee
Like Tennessee you picked, is that with 9.5 or do you pick them to win straight up?

If there is a "w" next to it, then they are expected both to cover the spread and win outright. In this case, no (w), no outright win. Contrast that with Miami, which DOES have a (w) next to it,

11/9 1:00 ET At Detroit -3 Miami* (w)

I expect both to cover the spread, they're three point dogs, AND for them to win outright.

It's the closest I can get to gambling without actually putting money down on that idiot process. ;-)

Just to make sure I get your 'system'........... you have picked Tennessee to beat the Ravens, no benefit of the spread involved? But if Tennessee loses by a field goal you still lose?

I rarely take naps, but yesterday I did (it was a good one in that I had lost a buncha normal sleep the night before), and therefore I missed the picks deadline. Not to worry, however: even though I wanted the Browns to win (their fans are pretty well as long-suffering as Lions' fans are, and Cleveland is part of the Rust Belt, so go Browns!),  I was picking Cincinnati, so I'm willing to accept that debit in the accounting of my predictive abilities. I'm 0-1 so far.

Here are my picks for the rest of Week 10:

Sun., Nov. 9Kansas City Chiefs at Buffalo Bills
Sun., Nov. 9Tennessee Titans at Baltimore Ravens
Sun., Nov. 9Dallas Cowboys vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Sun., Nov. 9Miami Dolphins at Detroit Lions
Sun., Nov. 9San Francisco 49ers at New Orleans Saints
Sun., Nov. 9Pittsburgh Steelers at New York Jets
Sun., Nov. 9Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Sun., Nov. 9Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders
Sun., Nov. 9New York Giants at Seattle Seahawks
Sun., Nov. 9St. Louis Rams at Arizona Cardinals.
Sun., Nov. 9Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers
Mon., Nov. 10Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles

I'm not interested in picking against the spread. It would require more research than I'm willing to do (I already waste too much time on sports). Also, I made the mistake a few years ago of betting money on my spread picks, and lost a slightly hurtful amount of dollars. The NFL, unless you're a professional bettor, is too unpredictable. (Which is why I always scoff at the talking sports network heads predicting actual scores, which just makes me disrespect them even more. I can't think of one of 'em who doesn't pretty well talk complete shit about everything else as well.)

research? What's that? Isn't it enough that an Eagle can obviously peck out the eyes of a Bear?

Well, that's it then..............straight up it is. Democracy lol

Bah. Tell it to Mad Max. I'm still going to pick against the spread and denote when an underdog should win, so still will be straight up scoring with you guys, I just enjoy picking against the spread so will have a second score which should be, if I'm right, about .20 below the first.

The NFL, unless you're a professional bettor, is too unpredictable.

even for them it's still too unpredictable. Most people play four teams on football cards. That means you can have a 75% win rate and STILL lose every single week. Tell me about it. I mean, is there even ONE person who thought the Browns would do so well against Cincy last night?

I don't give one tiny molecule of shit about how my picks turn out this week -- my Lions pulled off another miracle (!), courtesy of the young, inconsistent, but absolutely fucking brilliant Matthew Stafford. That kid can sling the ball! Dan Fouts, a Hall-of-Fame QB who was one of the CBS announcers, described one of Stafford's passes during the final drive as a "fastball thrown through a tiny window", and his final, winning, end-zone pass to one of the running backs -- delivered in a near-perfect spiral with, mind you, the young right-hander running to his left -- was a thing of instinctive and rehearsed beauty. It was why I watch football. I don't know how Matthew Stafford's career will ultimately develop, but I do know that as a longstanding (long suffering) fan of the Detroit Lions (I'm not quite ancient enough to remember the glory days of Bobby Layne), I've never been happier about the position of quarterback.

Now if we could only bring back Barry Sanders (an athlete who might make a less skeptical guy than me believe in God) . . .

7-2. In tough against the Cardinals (who are better and at home) next week.

Helps soften the blow of Michigan State's loss to the Buckeyes last night: not only good-bye to any hope (slim, at best) of a spot in the top four of the new system, but sayonara to even a Big Ten title. Got their asses kicked, those kids.

ditto...

Lions look good. I haven't watched Stafford, but, my sense is that from the fact that he's a passing quarterback who has been relatively healthy? for a number of years, that he must have a quality of elusiveness that enables him to avoid taking huge hits of the like to hurt one. So I think he may well be alright for a few years to come.

As for me, I'm fucking pissed. It's bad enough that my Steelers lost to the J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets!, a carnival wreck of a team, but then, after noting with a yawn last week that Ben had had two 6 TD passing games in a row, the radio host proceeds to cream himself in loving description of the Jets beating the Steelers for like ten fucking minutes straight. I eventually got so tired of it (after about 30 seconds) that I turned it off.

I expect that this is not going to be a good week for me. I've already lost on four spreads I picked, and straight up as well, on Cleveland, Jets, Niners and Lions wins, and don't expect the rest is going to be that much better.

so far 5 - 7 against the spread, 7 - 5 straight up. 2 - 2 on what I would have bet, so I can look at it as though I've made money again this week by not gambling! :-)

TP, straight up 10 - 2 pending Monday night, EZ 9 - 3 the same, (saves them turning the page back) and POTP just not to leave anyone out is 8 - 4.

Both the Niners and Cowboys chalk up a win, pretty much made my day. The Niner win was an absolute must, they really can't afford to lose any more games, uphill battle for the rest of the season. Not sure how long Palmer is going to be out for Arizona but their defense came through, I was really pulling for the Rams for the upset, then they shoot themselves in the foot. Damn!

this board moves fast. This thread already on the second page.

Okay, 8 - 5 for me straight up. EZ 10 - 3. TP 9 - 4, and POTP as always at the top at 11 - 2.

Against the spread,  6 - 7. Not good.

and Palmer out for the rest of the year. Really shakes up the NFC West. Backup is Drew Stanton (had to look it up)...but he did beat the Niners this year.

Seattle seems best poised to take advantage...they have two games with the Cards.

Right now, POTP, me, TP and Lit all have playoff hopes. EZ, barring a miracle, will be saving money on playoff tix this year. ;-)
