I'll start: I'm still marveling at the 2014 performance of that Bumgarner kid. Do you realize that with his post-season innings he pitched 270 of them this year? Amazing, given what his contemporaries manage. I hope he stays healthy. I doubt that he will, what with those dangerous mechanics, but may he thrive for years to come. What a kid! What a pro!

And my Steelers happily won (but also didn't cover the spread as I predicted earlier!) Close game, but now 7 - 4.

Yaz and I look like we're headed towards yet another showdown in playoffs, this time football. Hey, lady, you won last round...my turn this time...Big Ben beats Tom in the AFC Championship! :-)

 Those are fighting words, Mickey.

I would love to see that match up but it would make for a tense household here as husband is first a Steelers worshiper and secondly, now a Patriots fan as well.  I am proud to have another convert.  :)

But he may be asked to move out if this comes to pass.  :)

well, Michael Sam and Jason Williams are both gone. It appears that organized sports are not exactly the right venue to come out in. The arts and entertainment are one thing--folks don't shower together there, or tackle guys around the waist, or bang them up close to the boards, but it appears that there's still enough, not sure the word is homophobia, but discomfort, with homosexuality amongst a very high testosterone group to make it verboten to walk around with that tag attached to one.

Glad I didn't pick my Lions today. I figured they would lose to the best team in the league, but I didn't think they'd stink as badly as they did: Stafford was terrible (mainly because the offensive line was terrible), receivers dropped passes, they couldn't run for shit; defensively, the vaunted pass rushers let Brady do whatever he wanted, which was mostly short passes over the middle and into the flats (he was getting the ball off so quickly and accurately they didn't stand much of a chance anyway; Jesus, he's fucking good); the linebackers stunk, too. No bright spots at all, as the coach said in his post-game presser. I hope they don't ruin Thanksgiving. They're playing the Bears, and they're at home, so there's a couple of reasons for hope. But honestly, if I had to bet serious money on whether they'll be in the playoffs, I'd bet against them, even though a lot of the talking heads think they'll make it. (We all know, however, that all the football talking heads are full of shit.)

I think I did okay with my picks here, but I don't care. Being a fan of the Detroit Football Lions is a condition I wish I could shed. (I managed to quit smoking, so I should be able to swear off this addiction.)

Anyway, sorry . . . just venting.

Re:New sports thread

lol, I was busy arguing on the other pages, wanted to come and stir up some shit between Yaz and POTP before that game started.

I agree, POTP, kinda depressing that they didn't give a better game. I was listening to the radio, one of those check in at every stadium shows (which I actually like) and when they checked in after Detroits 2nd FG, the correspondent said, "This may well be a turning point" and seems to have been right. It's this kind of game, unfortunately, that tells you who the contendors, versus the pretenders, really are, and the dismal performance by the Lions today does NOT bode well for their chances down the road.

Niners win, but I think TP will agree with me that it wasn't a good win by any means. One suspects that without the added on 15 yards after Boldens late catch, the Niners don't win that game.

And I just heard someone say on a national show, "The 49ers down in Santa Clara...", that just sucks.

So, here's my idea. You know how Embassies are considered sovereign territory? I think Levis Stadium should be considered the sovereign territory of the City of San Francisco. I'm sure, legally, you could do something that would satisfy all three parties, and then you could say, "The San Francisco 49ers" again.

Right now, in fact, I'm more concerned about that moniker than I am the Redskins, lolol, I don't really give a fuck about the latter, but this Niners disjunction really grates on my nerves.

Assuming, as seems likely, that Baltimore wins tomorrow night, then it will be a week in which all AFC North teams won, and all of them played OUTSIDE their division. Just a reminder of which is the best division in football. Come to think of it, nice that they gave the Steelers their bye after a Monday night game...no short week for the Steelworkers!

AZ lost to Seattle, and badly, showing that Drew Stanton probably doesn't have what it takes to keep on top of the NFC west. Now only 2 games ahead of the Niners and Seahawks, but I expect it will be only a few more weeks before they lose the division lead.

HUGE game now between the Niners and Seattle. Whichever one wins probably goes to the playoffs, but the one that loses really really risks being left out.

To me, even more than the playoffs, this is the best time of the football season, when all possibilities are still open and there's so many games that are meaningful. I don't like complete parity, I LOVE when there is a dynasty, I think it gives other teams something to measure up to and it gives the residents of those cities SUCH pride, I know it's silly, but that's what sports is about,

But parity between the non-dynastic teams I do enjoy. And in the middle of the season, when they're so much going on, I just love it. By playoffs I'm pining about the season ending, they're great, but every week just reminds me we're about to lose the season.

LOL, the national radio show I'm listening to is obviously picking up my brainwaves...they just started talking about the AFC North being such a powerful division.

Excellent game between the Cowboys and Giants, back and forth in the 2nd half, Dallas marches down and scores the winning TD with 1 minute left in the game...a well deserved victory 31-28.

And yes, what can you say about the Niners except they won. What a lackluster performance by an almost non-existent offense. Defense played well but they'll need more than that for their remaining schedule, 2 games against Seattle, another game against Arizona, San Diego coming up after that. Seattle up next for the Niners.

Why in the world would you want to do that?  SC will bear the lion share of the costs and headache for eternity, and SF still gets all the glory of owning the team.     It was one of the biggest dumbest swindles I've even seen accepted by normally business savvy city.  It would have been one thing if it was a multi purpose venue like San Jose built for the Sharks...but it isn't.

Had to check in on the sports thread when I see QZ's name as the most recent poster. :-)

I get what you're saying, but it's just so absurd to have them playing so far away. I wouldn't mind it were San Mateo, or Tiburon, but damn, I always sneered at the New York Giants playing in Joisey...I guess the only silver lining is that at least the Niners are still in the SAME DAMN STATE!

Financially, though, not so sure it's that bad a deal for SC. A lot depends on how well the Niners do using the stadium for purposes other than football. A bowl game or two isn't really going to cut it, that I agree.

They're actually trying to push it as a conference center as well. That's not a bad idea, I can see how it would be attractive to a company having, say, a company wide meeting, to do so in a venue like that. Especially for sales...great way to rev up the testosterone in the male reps.

They're doing tours, but that's pretty limited I would think, both in potential audience and obviously in repeat business. Concerts will be pretty big.

The thing is that if they had built it in SF, I think it would gather a lot of business for non-football purposes.

Right now, SF is in a tizzy over the prospect of losing Pablo Sandoval. It looks like Boston will take him, sounds like the offers are about the same but that he's likely to choose Boston.

First, at the numbers they're talking about, 5 years between 18 - 20 million, I don't have a problem re-signing him. I do think that Pablo is MONEY during the postseason. He is Joe Montana to Barry Bond's Steve Young--one is a winner and rises to the occasion, the other is highly skilled, but doesn't have the heart. Panda has the heart.

That's why I think Boston is a good fit. During the season, Pablo isn't all that. So I didn't think that San Diego was a good fit because they're not going anyplace.

BUT, Boston is a perennial playoff team, and, even if Pablo doesn't perform all that well during the season, he can REALLY  help Boston in the postseason if they get there.

Most of all, Pablo is young, he needs to live life a little on the East Coast, feel the energy there, live the highlife in NYC, have some fun during these years. I doubt he'll be in baseball in another decade...unlike Big Papi, I think Panda will balloon to the point where he'll be useless pretty quickly. But for now, let him live life to the fullest, he can do that better in the Boston-NY corridor than he can in SF or San Diego.

Oh I agree it is absurd to be that far away, but I do see the positive factors of the location.  It is surrounded by large major hotels, a golf course, Great America, restaurants, near major freeways, and an airport.  Really the only major downside is the parking.  And it was a great deal for the Niners, plus fans come from the whole Bay Area and then some, so a drive is a drive I guess.
I don't know how it can be a conference center...it's an open venue.  They are trying to generate other uses, but so far I haven't seen anything big.

Great games on tap for Bird Day. First off, Chicago @ Detroit, Philly at Dallas and the grand finale...Seattle @ San Fran. Giving traditional thanks, good eating and conversation with the family, lots of football to top the day off.

Normally, I'd go with Chicago over Detroit but the Lions always seem to rise to the occasion on Thanksgiving, I'll give the edge to Dallas on their home field and I NEVAH pick against the Niners.

Re:New sports thread

Jeez, I'm kinda teed that they didn't keep the Steelers - Ravens game on Turkey Day. Two of the consistently best teams in the League should regularly play.

That said, this year, yeah, pretty good lineup because EVERYONE is in the mix. Chicago is kind of out of it in terms of playoffs, but this is a chance for them to put a hurting on Detroits playoff chances, on a national scene, so I expect them to play their hearts out. The Lions are kind of on their heels, so they've got to rise to the occasion, should be a really good game.

Dallas and Philly are duking it out for the NFC East, so that should be a good game as well, and as I mentioned, I think whoever loses the Seattle - SF matchup is almost surely out of the playoffs, so all three games should be really good.

Chicago I think covers, but Detroit pulls it out by an FG or so.

Philly I think is just more consistent than Dallas, I think that after Sunday night's game with the NYG, the Cowboys are due a fall.

TP, sorry, from what I see, while both defenses are pretty good, Niners just don't have enough of an offense to make it happen. What the hell happened to Vernon? Wasn't he angling for a contract extension earlier this year, they told him no, he showed up as scheduled, but he's been dropping balls all year long. Can't blame Colin for that. Anyways, it seems that the receivers coach isn't doing a very good job, and consequently, I just don't see the Niners doing much. I don't think Gore can run, he looks a bit tired to me, don't think Hyde is ready yet to carry the full load, so don't see a lot there. This may be a game that Harbaugh game plans specifically for Colin, that's what I would do, they haven't done so for him this year yet, and this would be a good time to pull it out. Otherwise I'm think 20 -13 or thereabouts.
