I'll start: I'm still marveling at the 2014 performance of that Bumgarner kid. Do you realize that with his post-season innings he pitched 270 of them this year? Amazing, given what his contemporaries manage. I hope he stays healthy. I doubt that he will, what with those dangerous mechanics, but may he thrive for years to come. What a kid! What a pro!

EZ, I think you gave my prognostications one too many on the credits side -- I was wrong about Chiefs-Raiders and Cardinal-Seahawks, thus making my record for the week 13-2.

that's fine, as I said it's just for fun, doesn't really matter to me, but I'll just note my own straight up record...just curious though...it is that hard to distinguish between winning straight up and against the spread?

At Houston -1.5 Cincinnati* win

that was a win on the spread, a LOSS on the straight up. Cincinnati covered, but they also won, I picked them to cover but to lose.

At Seattle -6.5 Arizona (w) loss

I lost on Arizona straight up, since I put a (w) there, but ALSO lost on Cincy straight up which won, when I had not picked them to do so.

No, no, no, no.........it's fun and I'm willing to count your picks as you like, because it is just for fun. But it's fun to keep track among us as well. Everything is easy when you understand the 'system'. Yours is confusing to me.......

At Houston-1.5Cincinnati* win

that was a win on the spread, a LOSS on the straight up. Cincinnati covered, but they also won, I picked them to cover but to lose.
Now, I see Cincinnati in bold (Cinc. to win by more than 1.5 pts) Your little * means that you picked them to cover by losing only by 1 pt? Gimme a break.... I must be stupid, I don't see how Cincinnati in bold print with an * means you piceked them to cover a 1pt game and to lose??????

At Seattle-6.5Arizona (w) loss

I lost on Arizona straight up, since I put a (w) there, but ALSO lost on Cincy straight up which won, when I had not picked them to do so.

Let's make this simple for me, if you don't mind. Just pick your games with the spread or without. So you use the spread unless I see a (w), then I will know it's straight up. The * is useless

Will that work for you?

Denver, good team but they won't make the big dance, not this year. In the AFC, I'm betting Denver and New England tangle for the right to play in the Super Bowl with the Patriots coming out on top. I don't see any other team in the AFC matching up and giving them a run for their money.

NFC pretty much a toss up between several teams, Arizona has a good defense but their offense is beginning to show chinks in the armor and they're playing in the very tough NFC West division, they'll be lucky to keep their lead. Seattle still very tough, Niners defense back to full strength and playing well, if their offense starts clicking, they'll be the team to beat.

Dallas, damned if I know. They were picked in the beginning for a so-so year and have pretty much defied the odds, their defense playing much better than anticipated, Murray one of the top rushers in the NFL. They may be the darkhorse against the odds.

I'm a Niner fan myself, picked them to go 12-4 for the season and win it all. That was before numerous injuries on the defense and that idiot Aldon Smith walked into LA terminal and said he had a bomb. Fucking moron, he's lucky they didn't kick him out of the NFL. I still think Kaepernick is playing like a flash-in-the-pan, too inconsistent, loves to carry the ball like a loaf of bread, not that accurate as a passer. I was much more impressed with his back-up (Josh Johnson), very cool-headed, able to move around well in the pocket, good scrambler and very accurate as a passer. Niners have their work cut out for them but I still have hopes.

I look for a good Super Bowl this year, very competitive, either Denver or New England (probably New England) against any number of NFC teams. I'm still betting the Niners against the odds.

Titan...I agree with your AFC assessment. NE is absolutely playing better than anyone else right now. AFC West could go to either Denver or K.C...then either one will most likely challenge Pats in the AFC championship.

In the NFC...G-Bay against someone in the NFC West (Sea/SF/Ariz). But honestly...don't you think the NFC South with the best record right now is 4-7... should give up their playoff spot to either Sea/SF/Ariz? It will be a shame when the Saints or Falcons win their division at 8-8 and go to the playoffs.

Good post #99...thanks.

Green Bay, good pick. Aaron Rogers always a threat to put up lots of points, not sure if Green Bay's defense is up to snuff against the real bad boys, outside of Detroit, their conference isn't all that strong but the same could be said about Dallas in the Eastern division. The money probably on Green Bay but I'm still going with Dallas, mainly because they've made a liar out of me all year long. Dallas plays Seattle/Arizona/Niners for the NFC title.

I'm with you on the best record playoff spots ( I think Mickey might agree on this one), but that's not the way it's set up, probably because of the NFL's own perception of "fairness" or the franchise owners in each division throwing a tantrum. I'm betting money enters the equation also.

I would be happy to see the change. The post season is the 2nd season. So, great, you won your division crown, that's the regular season. You get to fly that pennant next year. But teams should have to earn their way to the postseason--not have a freaking home game drop in their lap when they've had a losing season.

We can just set the format according divisions first, barring a winning record of any team in a given division, that slot becomes a third wildcard.

I think the change would be good. I think one thing that comes into play is "any given sunday", as EZ likes to say, the idea is that maybe a weak team gets, because they win their division, gets into the playoffs and go all the way. Hey, Pittsburgh and the Giants both did it, as wildcards, on the road, and neither of them could in any way be described as the best team in the league that year, but both of them got hot at a lucky time. So an owner can gear his spending towards what's necessary to beat the teams in his division, not the teams in the league.

One can say that's the way the ball bounces, one can say it's eminently unfair to teams that have put the money, the players, the coaching staff, into excellence, and now don't get to show it in the playoffs because SOMEONE has to win the NFC South.

The standard should be simple. You need a winning--not even an 8 - 8--record to get into the playoffs. 9 -7 at the very least. Or I'll be nice and accept 8 - 7 - 1.

I heard that Atlanta and NO could potentially tie, at 6 - 10, and Atlanta would win the division because of tiebreaker, they'd have be NO twice.

If that happens, I think we'd see a change, it would just be embarrassing as hell, I would think, to the League to see them go in if there's SanFran/AZ or Seattle or GB/Detroit sitting at 10 wins. Or both Philly and Dallas have potential for 10+wins, you could potentially see an 11 win team get cut out even while a team with half its wins went it...just ridiculous.

Jeez, don't you think you guys are counting the AFC North a little short? Even with their divisional games, ALL four teams have at least 7 wins, they seem to beating up on the rest of the league pretty well. Peyton I think would have a REALLY hard time against Baltimore's defense, and I think he might even have a hard time, if Big Ben gets in a rhythm with Antonio Brown, putting up enough points against Pittsburgh. I think Denver goes down to the first AFC North team he faces...

That said, I wouldn't guarantee that the AFC North would beat TB. Now that is a truly GREAT qb, I would put the current rankings at Brady-Manning-Rogers-Big Ben (he HAS won 2 SBs). On that I'd say that Brady would need to have a bad game for the AFC North rep to win. If Brady plays even average (for him) he'd probably win. He lives a charmed life.

btw, methinks the ghost of sportsthreads past may have visited us, under an ironically alliterative nick, and sporting the badge of the team currently hosting as QB one Peyton Manning, described by some, albeit wrongly, as the greatest qb ever.

Another impotent performance by the Niner offense, Kaepernick with two interceptions, 3 turnovers, a defense that missed more one-on-one tackles than I could count. Bottom line, they just don't have the juice this year, I give them slim to no hope of making the playoffs. The rest of the season is for pride and playing spoiler. Oh well, life in the big city.

it was a bad bad day for the Niners. More and more you gotta start wondering whether Kaep has what it takes.

Folks remember Kordell Stewart, "Slash", from the Steelers? Great for a year or two, while coaches learned how to scheme for him, but eventually just couldn't cut lit as a starter...it takes more than just physical skills to be a QB.

In fact, just heard that Jed tweeted, and flashed on the scoreboard: "Thank you to all the Faithful for coming out tonight. Tonight's loss was unacceptable, and I apologize for that."

That's pretty much Jimbo getting handed his walking papers.

If Matthew Stafford doesn't develop into an elite QB, it won't be for a lack of throwing talent. Man, can that kid sling the rock! Against the Bears on Thursday (granted, a terrible pass defense), he was on fire. But I'm not really talking about his stats (which were outstanding) -- I'm taking about how beautifully he throws a football into tight spaces: his passes are so hard (one of the offensive linemen later said he could hear the whirr of the ball coming out of Stafford's hand), and accurate, and their spirals so tight and perfect, that you remember why you watch high-level sports -- to be astonished. If that kid becomes more consistent, and stays healthy, he'll probably end up in Canton. He's not an elite QB yet, but I'm hoping.

Some big college games today, too, huh? The game I have on isn't big, but I gotta have a look at my Spartans. They're already up 10-0 against Penn State, whom they should handle easily, and then await an invitation to a pretty prestigious bowl game. Disappointing year, though. Anyway, I won't feel guilty jumping to all the rivalry games, a few of which have playoff implications, and all of which could be really exciting.
