how the hell do you pick Oak/KC, Raiders lose by 58 one week and then win the next week.

Not really confident in any of the best bets except really NE.

Game of the week is Cincy/Cleveland. Johnny Football starting, will be interesting to see how he does. I think Cincy will win under the circumstances, sadly, since it means that my Steelers are really pretty much faced with another must-win in Atlanta.

There's a lot of teams in the mix for a wildcard, fortunately, the Dolphins are one and are likely to lose to the Patsies this week. Buffalo goes against GB so they'll probably lose too. Tennessee could win this week against the Jets, so they'd keep pace with the Steelers as well. The Chargers and the Chiefs are the main competition at 8 - 5 and 7 - 6 respectively...I'd say that the Chargers will lose against Denver and if the Chiefs lose against Oakland they're toast.

So I think if the Steelers can win this week, go 9 - 5, then they'll be in the catbird seat for at least ONE of those two wildcards. If Manziel can lead the Browns to a victory, all the better, a Steelers win would then put them in the division lead. But I worry a lot about Matt Ryan at home against a really porous defense. Steelers and Baltimore are about even in PF, but the Steelers have given up about 50 points more than the Ravens; better divisional record (thus far) helping out.

I'll start: I'm still marveling at the 2014 performance of that Bumgarner kid. Do you realize that with his post-season innings he pitched 270 of them this year? Amazing, given what his contemporaries manage. I hope he stays healthy. I doubt that he will, what with those dangerous mechanics, but may he thrive for years to come. What a kid! What a pro!

My Ohio St. husband is over the moon about his Buckeyes.  Their win, with their third-string quarterback, was an amazing victory.

Good day for my Steelers! 42 - 21 over Cincy, now only a half-game behind, and a better win than Baltimore's or Browns since it's in-division.

hey, codify, I think it actually went as I said, Alabama and OSU, Oregon and FSU. It seems the argument about being a solid enough team that you can plug in various folks in the most critical position and still win did the telling after all, even according to the comittee's chairman.

Lions win 34-17, same score as their Thanksgiving victory: Stafford and Johnson both excellent again; over a hundred yards on the ground (though 57 of 'em came on one play); defensive line harassed the shit out of McCown, the Tampa QB. Not all good news, however: reverting to a bad habit of yesteryear(s), they were penalized for over a hundred yards. One of those penalties was a personal foul against Suh, their all-star DT. Ten years ago, it wouldn't have been a penalty, but I guess times change. Anyway, though I still am not assured of a playoff spot, it's heady stuff, having your team in contention at this late point of the season. (Well, for Lions fans, it's heady stuff.)

I'm kind of surprised that Ohio State made it into the playoff. I don't follow college ball as much as I do the NFL, but I was under the impression that the Big Ten was widely considered to be the weakest of the five power conferences. I thought Baylor might make it in because they and TCU were tied, but had beaten the latter in their head-to-head earlier in the season.

One of those penalties was a personal foul against Suh, their all-star DT.

Were I a coach, I'd be okay with that. The way players are penalized these days, I would assume as a coach that I'm going to get a PF during the game that wouldn't have been when most of these players started in the league, so wouldn't worry about it. If it got really bad, yes, that's a different case. But I would accept that its going to happen, and wouldn't want to restrain somone like Suh in return for saving fifteen yards a game. Stupid or excessive PFs, yeah, that's one thing, but not if it's going to be just one of those now sacrosanct calls that would have been laughed at 3 years ago.

And I was fully prepared, about the 3rd qtr of the Steelers game, to join EZ in the "Playoffs? PLAYOFFS?" crowd, but turns out that it was TP who received lovely parting gifts instead.

WTF happened to the Niners? Did Harbaugh really lose the lockerroom? Did these guys just give up?

Still in the sweepstakes: POTP, Yaz, Lit, (with an apparently strong victory over Philly today, very disappointed in the Eagles), and my Steelers.

Lose to a 1-11 team...whoo boy. I think the Niners are still mathmatically in the hunt but I give them zero chance. Last three games against Seattle, Arizona, St.Louis, a really bad year for the Niners and no one can put their finger on why. If I had to guess, an anemic offense and lack of intensity. I'll also add a poor job of coaching for leaving Kaepernick as a starter when he was, for the most part, unproductive as a quarterback. You want to know why the Niners had a bad year? Some call it "team effort".

Interesting sports tidbit. I heard 3 teams may be relocating, possibly next year. San Diego, Oakland and yup, St.Louis...again.

I'm hoping they meet up with the Patriots there, as it is meant to be.  lol  ;-)

and on a more felicitious note...

San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner had a performance for the ages in the 2014 postseason, earning him this year's SI Sportsman of the Year Award.

The 25-year-old lefthander threw a record 52 2/3 innings in the playoffs and gave up just six earned runs for an absurd 1.03 ERA. He struck out 45 batters in his seven appearances, walking only six and giving up 28 hits.

Mickey, EZ may be right about the Seahawks, although I suspect the Packers will have something to say about things. He's probably right about the Pats, too. But it's football and you know -- any-given-Sunday (or Monday night, or Thursday night) and all that. Anyway, that's how I help bolster my otherwise hopeless private fantasy that the Lions will appear in their first Super Bowl in early 2015.

Harbaugh is gone for sure. He could go to Michigan.

actually, I heard on the radio this morning that Michigan had been talking to him the past weekend, and he indicated a strong desire to stay in the NFL. It makes sense that since everyone knew his name was out there, Michigan did better to feel him out to start before looking at other candidates, few of whom are going to have the potential cachet Harbaugh has to alumni and boosters.

It also doesn't surprise me, he'd turn it down: he's a competitive guy, this is the big leagues so to speak, and to return to college, at least at this point, would look like he accepted he was whipped and couldn't compete in the NFL. Give him a ring or a two and it's a different story, but not right now...

Mickey, EZ may be right about the Seahawks,

oh, yeah, I probably agree. I just hate seeing him groveling at Richie Rich's feet. Honestly, between the pomposity of Russell Wilson, the childish behavior of Sherman, and the surly behavior of Marshaun, they don't strike me as a very friendly set of players. I would like to see them taken down a peg.

Though, lol, don't think it's going to happen THIS week with the Niners.

I was really disappointed in Philly. I thought if any offense could do the trick, it would be Philly's.

Gotta admit, it would be an interesting SB between the Pats and the Seahawks. 'Twould settle the debate, I'm thinking, between Brady and Manning as the best of his time (though it's already settled for me) because I think Brady would beat them.

I try not to bring any personal judgments into my enthusiasm for football because, as recent NFL scandals have reminded us, we don't know anything about these guys, Who would've thought Ray Rice was capable of knocking his wife out with one punch, or Adrian Peterson of whipping a little boy (his own son!) to the point of bloodshed (or, harkening back, O.J. Simpson of stabbing and slicing to death his ex-wife and the guy he thought was her new boyfriend)? If Sherman or Lynch or Wilson do something brutal and cruel off-stage -- er, off-field -- then I'll re-think what I think about them, which, so far, is that they're just young, powerful, successful dudes feeling their oats. Remember Muhammad Ali, especially back when he was Cassius Clay? Millions of people hated him. I was just a kid, but I hated him, too, because I'd been brought up to believe that braggarts were terrible people. I eventually came to love him for many reasons besides his boxing skill, but for all I know, he could, at this moment, be a septuagenerian shitbag. Think Bill Cosby.

The Packers don't have the defense, and when they run into a team that does have one they will be finished. 37 points to Atlanta, at home?  They were lucky Atlanta didn't score again and beat them 44-43. Super Bowl Champions don't give up points like that. nope!

The 2 defenses worthy of a trip to the SB from the NFC are Detroit and Seattle.

N.E. defenses always seem to peak right on time, I wonder if Denver's also will?

It would also be fun to see the hungry Lions take on the equally hungry Bengals.

Who would've thought Ray Rice was capable of knocking his wife out with one punch, or Adrian Peterson of whipping a little boy (his own son!) to the point of bloodshed (or, harkening back, O.J. Simpson of stabbing and slicing to death his ex-wife and the guy he thought was her new boyfriend)?

I would have. Certainly moreso than any other offensive player, and as much as any defensive player. Running backs play hard, as you know. An offensive lineman's job is done once the pass is off or the back is through the line, but a running back has to keep on running, keep on hitting, etc.

That takes real aggression, it seems to me. So that position I would ALWAYS consider likely to engage in aggression off the field as well as on it. I'm always surprised when you have good backs, like Frank Gore, like Bettis, and others, who DON'T push the envelope, and respect them a lot more, because they're containing that aggression ON the field, rather than taking it off the field.

Not really arguing against what you say about the Seahawk players in particular--though I would note that Jerry Rice was once young, powerful and successful, so I don't think feeling one's oats is cause for childish behavior. That said, I take the point. But on the above, yes, I think any running back would be one of the first to look at if you walked by someone beat up and the suspects were potentially any member of a football team.

lol, meant to say if KC had covered.

Did you hear Adam Meyer got arrested? He's on (or WAS) every Friday, in the morning and afternoon, bought ten minutes, to push his lines. Accused of extorting 25 million from some sap in Fond du Lac, Wisc. (Who the fuck has that kind of money and lives in fucking FOND DU LAC???????) Claimed that he (Meyer) owed an asian client millions of bucks, pretended to have I guess a Chinese accent impersonating the fake Chinese bookie on the phone to the poor "victim" (anyone this fucking stupid isn't a victim) and waved a gun around.

lol. 25 fucking million. And I can never win the lottery. Damn.

    http://calvinayre.com/2014/12/09/business/sports-betting-tout-adam-meyer-charged-fraud-extortion/

    All very amusing.

I picked up a Warrior flag, one of those flags they make for your car that you fly around when the teams are in the playoffs, I found one last spring and took it home, so was in my window during the bb playoffs. Warriors have now won 14 in a row, that's a pretty damn good record, they're 19 - 2, that's like winning 38 in a row in baseball.

And POTP you should put Bumgarner's SI pic in the lead post...
