I'll start: I'm still marveling at the 2014 performance of that Bumgarner kid. Do you realize that with his post-season innings he pitched 270 of them this year? Amazing, given what his contemporaries manage. I hope he stays healthy. I doubt that he will, what with those dangerous mechanics, but may he thrive for years to come. What a kid! What a pro!

Actually, I struggled with that game too. Arizona hasn't lost at home for over a year now, but in the end I think the Seahawks don't lose again this year. That plus the fact that Lindsey is just a tad too inexperienced to play against the Beast mode defensive unit of Seattle

I almost took the Bengals to beat the Broncos too, but they haven't been that sharp on the defensive side of the ball.

The Chiefs I expect to surprise the Steelers, their defense is much better than they get credited to be.

Saturday NFL this week! That hasn't happened for a long time. Two teams, Philly and Sand Diego, need to win, while their respective opponents, Washington and SF, don't. Both games could be good. I'll probably pay more attention to the Chargers-49ers because I always like watching Philip Rivers. He's not a great QB (too inconsistent), but he's very good and has mad skills.

Congratulations to my

for winning a playoff spot, right now only a WC, but should Cincy lose tomorrow against Peyton, the the Steelers are in the drivers seat at 10 - 5, Cincy would be 9 - 5 - 1.

And I see Tom has already locked up the #1 seed, but the second seed is still to be determined. If Indy loses today, then they and the Steelers could both go in next week 10 - 5, if both win, and the Steelers are the division champ, they get the tiebreaker since they beat the Colts and the first week bye.

We'll see.

Re:New sports thread

well, thanks, albeit I don't know how much I can actually take credit myself...;-)

I am more concerned that it is now guaranteed that the winner of the NFC South will have a losing record, 7 - 9 at best.

You would think this would be an easy thing to change. I almost wrote that I expected it would be addressed in the spring.

But, now that I think about it, I'm not sure. If I'm in a group of four, I have a one in four chance of getting to the playoffs. I'm really  competing against only 3 other teams for a slot. The chances that I'm going to have a close to or similar but for tiebreakers with the division leader aren't that great. So, I stand a better chance at the playoffs if I am only competing against those 3 than if I'm competing essentially against all other teams in my conference.

Also, for the NFL, there may be a desire to ensure the money a playoff game brings is evenly distributed, the cities in a conference can be guaranteed income in their territorial area, consider the AFC North with all four in relatively small base area, so the money generated by those games and any playoff games goes into a regularly homogenized locale. That may be more in the NFL's interest than one area being left out once twice or more consistently and seeing general support for football decline in that area.

Speaking of which, bones, aren't you happy the Falcon's are so close to winning the NFC South?

lolol.

what's interesting is that while the Niners' defense has been talked up a lot, I heard on the radio this morning that they've lost five games after leading in the second half.

There's no excuse for losing that game. Three touchdowns up and you lose? That's pathetic.

Will have to check out the Kaepernick run on youtube or something, that was apparently very cool.

Long and short though is that the defense for all it was talked up wasn't that great.

Time really to clean house.

Heard a host call for Mike Shanahan, 62, as head coach. What do you think?

I was thinking Rex Ryan. ;-)

Football moves forward and some of the retread type of couches just don't keep up.  Try going and finding new ones which we have seen have been doing a good job.  We need new idea's to win and the old retreads are not going to give them to you.

If I am searching for a new couch I would first look at all the defensive coordinators.  They do seem to make the best couches.  Good defense will prevail most times against a powerful offence.

Now more importantly is my Seahawks kicked ass again.  One more to go then it may well be that the route to the super bowl will once again go through Seattle.  And yes with what the Seahawks are doing signing their core players I think we will see a team capable of winning another super bowl.after they win this one.  At least that is my hope. But the main thing to take away from the Seahawks is that they have excellent management. What happens in the off season usually effects what happens on the field.  Seattle has been excellent in the off season.

I think that between now and the time the Seahawks play again that the rest of the NFC will pray that they lose to the rams.  They are very worried that they will have to lose to the Seahawks. But then that is why the game must be played as words do not give a win or loss.

Actually, Mickey, Rex Ryan wouldn't be a bad choice, as long as he's got a good QB-whisperer on his coaching staff. He's a great defensive coach (gives Brady and Belichik fits most of the time), and his players (reputedly) would go through walls for him. He's been hung out to dry by Jets management and deserves another head-coaching gig, IMO. Actually, I think it's weird that Harbaugh hasn't worked out in SF because, until this year, all he's ever done as a coach is win (in college, too). I don't know enough about the situation there to speak to it properly, but, as I said, it seems weird that a team would want to get rid of such a successful coach.

Sorry, TP. :-(  Don't forget, though, that they lost to a team with the amazing Philip Rivers slinging the ball all over the place.  (He played that game with a herniated disc and fractured ribs!) I get that he can be obnoxious, but he's always been the epitome of toughness.

Really sorry, EZ. :-(   :-(

And congrats, Mickey, on the Steelers getting into the post-season casino. I would love nothing more than their facing (and valiantly losing to) my Lions in the SB, but I wouldn't bet a red cent on it -- that particular SB scenario, that is. I really don't know who's gonna be in the Biggest Game, but I do know it ain't gonna be Detroit. (Your guys, I think, have a better chance than my guys, but I don't think your guys are gonna make it, either.). My boys go to Lambeau next week for their division title (and a first-round bye, I believe); if they lose, they could easily, depending on the outcomes of other games, end up going to Dallas as the sixth seed. And if that talented offense (a true embarrassment of riches) plays like it did on Sunday against a defense as shitty as the Bears', Dallas is where they'll be.

Anyway, it's never hard to hate the Cowboys (because, Jerry Jones) -- for me, they're like the Yankees or the Red Sox -- but I'll have a major Cowboy-hate hard-on if that's the case.  (That sounds kinda goofily homoerotic, but whatcha gonna do?)

Good defensive-minded reputation but I keep channeling Mike Singletary for some reason.

And correct me if I'm wrong here, but doesn't Dallas and Seattle have the same won-lost records and didn't Dallas already put a whoopin on Seattle earlier this year? Pretty sure that if all things remain equal, Dallas may end up playing Seattle in Dallas by virtue of that win over Seattle earlier this season. And I could really get into seeing the Seahawks get their feathers plucked by those gunslingers from Dallas...

Most defensive coordinators having a tidy gut, you're right: they do make the best couches.

bah ha ha. okay, you know I never rag on you about misspellings, but after the 3rd time you earned it...;-)

The reason why I mentioned Ryan is in part because of defense, and given Seattle and AZ, its clear that defense rules in the NFC west, but even more important, this:

and his players (reputedly) would go through walls for him.

that's the sense I get too. No matter how bad they've been, freaking Gino Smith, they really do seem a solid team, just not a good one, and that's something that gets credit to the coach. All teams talk about about how they love their coach. And when they're winning, they may even mean it. But only a few coaches inspire real affection in their players, as opposed to, "yeah, he's a hell of a coach". Bill Walsh got respect, but not, I think, true affection (at least during his coaching years) nor did Parcells or Belichek I'm sure as hell doesn't...Chuck Noll did I get the sense Jimmy Johnson did, and I think Rex Ryan does.

Rex Ryan seems to be able to bring a little of the joy back into football. I like that.

I get offended when I listen to Jim Harbaugh on the radio with his show. It's like he sees the hosts as adversarial and goes out of his way to be offensive. The hosts will make some generalized hello comment and then there'll be dead air for fifteen seconds. It's just the way he handles it, like everyone should be damn glad he's big enough to take a few minutes out of his ever-so-important day to talk with the fans. Dude, you're a fucking football coach. It's ain't brain surgery, it ain't even Mother Theresa. Get over yourself.

I don't think you get the same treatment as a fan by Rex Ryan. I'm not even a Niners fan, but I get offended on their behalf when Harbaugh gets all snotty and self-important, and treats others crudely.

I think Ryan gets what the NFL is to a far, far, far better degree than Harbaugh could ever hope.

Re:New sports thread

Date Posted:23-12-2014 05:31:30Copy HTML

And I'll bet he gave the same treatment to owner Jed York and GM Trent Balkey. Let's be frank: the guy went to three NFC Championships, and still has a chance to finish 8 - 8 and not have one losing season in four years. How many other times would a coach be fired under those circumstances, especially when we know that a lot of the personnel have been injured this year...Vernon Davis, various receivers in and out, Frank Gore getting old, Carlos Hyde a rookie, so clearly there are mitigating factors that speak to why the Niners have done so poorly all things considered.

But not in any other team would this be sufficient to cause his dismissal.

The Thanksgiving Night tweet by Jed York, "This is unacceptable", on the freaking scoreboard at Levis Plaza, that tells you that this is NOT business: this is personal. Jed York does not LIKE Jim Harbaugh as a person. Now, Jed York may not be angels and light all the time either. But he's a civilized man, raised in wealth and with an expectation of certain standards of behavior amongst professionals. The way I've heard Harbaugh talk to the media tells me that he has no respect for them. I imagine that he credits himself, certainly to a large extent rightly, with turning the Niners around, and feels that if anything, it should be Jed York kissing his ass and not the other way around.

So I have no doubt he gave Jed York, and probably Trent Balkey the GM as well, one of those frosty silences he's given others, in which he intends you to see the words in his mind, "Why the fuck do I have to waste my time talking with such a loser". I doubt he respects Jed York, I doubt he respects Trent Balkey, anymore than he respects the media. He has respect only for athletes and probably extremely bright men like the profs and students at Stanford, and if charged with it would probably shrug and say, "they're achievers. The others aren't."

This is personal, clearly, between York and Harbaugh. One guy says to expect Harbaugh's dismissal within 24 - 48 hours after the game. He can't just resign because there's a year left on his contract, so I expect that York will stick a fork, Longfellow that I am, in Harbaugh in the most unpleasant manner, perhaps going so far as to release it to the media BEFORE he calls Jim with the news.

And, just in the event any feels necessary to adopt Steelers colors for the nonce...here is one of my favorite backgrounds for my widescreen monitor. I do note, however, that on the monitor, it shows a very faint starburst, it's just very visible on this one. All in all a FINE work of art!

Now, this one is also very cool...except for when they bastardized the logo on the upper left with that green...I may have to recolor that myself!

But one of my favorite pics is this one, look at what team has a presence of concentrated fandom in the most states.

This map is done by county, and represents the dominant team in that county. It's very well done...look at my home state of CT. While the baseball divide goes right down the middle, and I mean literally splits the city of New Britain in half between Yankees and Red Sox, the vast majority of the state is hugely Patriot oriented. But you will notice that Greenwich County, the richest county of America and bedroom community for the NYC elite, is solidly Giant.

Don't know why SC is almost completely Steeler Country, amusing to see patches spread all over the country, one county in GA, a couple in TN, half of NC, one in NE, one even in ND buried amongst the Viking fans...dominant in Hawaii and half of Alaska. Steelers look like they actually dominate in Ohio, despite two NFL teams there...no wonder why the rivalry is so strong, same with Baltimore.

Look at NJ. I heard the other day that Chris Christie was seen in Jerry Jones' box, partying it up when the Cowboys beat Philly, that is NOT going to sit well, chortle chortle, with the South Joisey fans. lolol.

Enjoy your holidays mickey, wishing your Steelers good luck against Cincinnati Sunday. I think big Ben is due for one of his untimely duds. Maybe Brown and Bell will be able to pull it out for the guys.

This thread should have been named the NFL thread.  it is a one note song.

So, it's January and college Basketball gets into conference play.  Here is my analysis.  Kentucky #1 - #5.  Duke #10.

Then, the rest of the top 25 are all ranked 15.

Oy, and here I am, looking forward to Spring Training!  :)

Regarding football, I am hoping Mr. Brady is resting up........

We've all known people like Trump...and Trumpie - that creep you can never trust because they are always looking for an angle, a way to cheat people out of their money. A way to reneg on a contract, to not pay in full......they are con artists. Trump does this kind of thing because he believes that because he's very wealthy, the rules of decency do not apply to him and of course, he can threaten to sue anyone. When poor people act like Trump - well they do it because they are scammers. They have no ethics in business or in life.
