I'll start: I'm still marveling at the 2014 performance of that Bumgarner kid. Do you realize that with his post-season innings he pitched 270 of them this year? Amazing, given what his contemporaries manage. I hope he stays healthy. I doubt that he will, what with those dangerous mechanics, but may he thrive for years to come. What a kid! What a pro!

 Mickeyrat,

I would love to see the Steelers make it to the super bowl.  I would love a revenge meeting between the two teams.I can still remember that super bowl.  Granted we had Hasselback as QB so we never really had a chance to close out that game. But to play the Steelers in the super bowl again would be great. Not so great for you as they would lose big time to the Seahawks.

Speaking of which, bones, aren't you happy the Falcon's are so close to winning the NFC South?

lolol.

Rub it in! Matt Ryan is steadily maturing as a QB and Julio Jones is awesome. Roddy White needs to be a little more consistent. One of the best passing offenses in the league. The Falcons beat the Cardinals and gave Green Bay and Pittsburgh pretty good scares. After the spate of offensive line injuries they are settling down and giving Ryan enough time in the pocket to find a receiver. If the defense can hold Cam we'll get the NFC South and don't be surprised if the first playoff game does to Atlanta.

One other element that has been mentioned and with which I agree: Mike Smith's job has been said to be on the line and the players really like him. They are almost playing as if they are intent on helping Arthur Blank decide to keep Smith.

Live it or live with it.

lol. Two things relevant. First, the Steelers aren't one of those pussy teams like the NFC. Second, not for nothing is the AFC North is known as the Black and Blue Division: Russell and BeastMode will find themselves hurtin' by the end of the first couple of plays.

Of course, we won't have to worry about it since the road to the SB goes through Detroit this year...and I'm pretty sure that Richard Sherman will be more crying like a baby than trash talking when he tries to cover Megatron. ;-)

bones, isn't it nice when the team owner's name is Blank. Become nice an easy to fill in the epithet necessary, in this year's case, for Atlanta I expect, it will be Arthur-Time-To-Give-Mike-His-Walking-Papers.

Fortunately, NOT a junior.

Don't worry lit, the Steelers are a long shot even for the AFC championship game this year. By the way mickey, the 'Black n Blue' division is the NFC north, formerly the NFC central.

Barring some major injury to key players the Seahawks will be playing the Patriots Feb. 1. Both of these 2 teams are at the top of their games from top to bottom. Both are relatively healthy, deep and playing with great team chemistry in the locker rooms.

Legion of Doom defense and Beast mode offense will claim their second SB Feb. 1. IMO

By the way mickey, the 'Black n Blue' division is the NFC north, formerly the NFC central.

used to be, yeah. Not any more. Baltimore and Pittsburgh have taken over...you can't claim that GB has had a defense really since Favre days, and certainly the Bears are nothing to write home about since the days of McMahon. Detroit's defense is pretty good this year, but certainly has no history of being so, and the woeful Vikings haven't managed anything in 40 years now, it's LONG stretch from the time of the Purple People Eaters!

Honest to God, exCEPT for the Packers, the division hasn't even produced an SB winner in 30 years.

As for your picks, bah, you're just a frontrunner. If either Seahawks or Patsies should lose on Sunday, you'll probably immediately run to squawk the virtues of whatever team beats them.

I think either Dallas or the Lions are capable of beating the Seahawks. Romo chokes a lot, otherwise I'd say Dallas has the edge there frankly, because otherwise Dallas has a formidable offense.

I think Detroit, if playing at home, has a slim chance, but a chance nonetheless, if Megatron eats up Richard Sherman, or even opens the other Lions receivers to yards and scores, then I do think that Detroit's defense is capable of containing Wilson and leaving Lynch to grind out yards, not enough, though, to offset Detroit's passing yards and scores.

You always go for the most facile observations. "Beastmode" my ass. Lynch is a good running back, no doubt, but it's not like he strides onto the field and the Hawks are guaranteed to win. Remember that if Arizona doesn't lose two quarterbacks, the Seahawks are probably even lucky to get into the playoffs. Sorry to Lit and SK, but on the late slomoe thread, I said specifically at the start of the year that I didn't see the Seahawks as being by default repeat, and they've shown me nothing really since then to change my (always correct) opinion.

As for my Steelers, yes, I think it's 50/50 they go down right away. When they lose, they lose badly. But, when they click, right now there's no more powerful offense in the league between Le'Veon Bell, Antonio Brown and Big Ben, all three of whom are Pro Bowlers. Compare Bell's overall numbers to "Beastmode's" and tell me who is the better back this year. I lamented the Steelers' inconsistency earlier in the year, and have no problem reiterating it, but I have no reason to believe that any other AFC team is capable of matching their offense, even if their defense sucks. (Troy should at this point just sit his ass down and stick to cheerleading...he does more harm than good on the field.)

I'm not going to trash Tom Brady and say that I think he would lose. I don't. But it's not unknown, so much depends on his personal play, moreso I think than with Big Ben, that if he has a bad day, I think the Patriots go down. But, then again, he doesn't have many bad days, so we'll just have to see. But honestly, I wouldn't put any money on Patriots/Steelers either way, but probably would choose the over!

How will your quarterback throw to his receivers with him lying on his back with a few Seahawks on top of him/

well, seriously, Ben and Wilson possess the same skill sets. Tom Brady if hit goes down. Peyton if hit goes down. Andy Dalton seems to go down a lot if hit. Tony Romo seems to have pretty limited mobility. But Rodgers, Big Ben, Wilson, especially the latter two, are big enough to take an initial hit, or speedy enough to get out of the way, and make things happen on the fly. So I don't imagine he'd be taking a whole lot of sacks.

Bullshit mickey, the black n' blue division is what it is regardless of what you think it should be. It's not a crown that passes from division to division depending on what some guy in a duplex by the bay thinks.

Gee, I hope you're right mickey. Not sure what a "frontrunner" is?  I certainly don't go with the winner of yesterday's contest if that's what you mean.
The reality is that I can see the Seahawks and the Patriots are playing the best football as we head into the playoffs, and most importantly they are being very consistent the past month or two. Their front offices are like models of what a front office needs to succeed. Those two TEAMS are the best 2 teams today, period. You keep saying I am a "frontrunner", I am perceptive that's all. I call em like I see em.

You want to have some fantasy conversations? Yeah, OK, it would be real neat to see Detroit meet Cincinnati in the SB. Or we could get really wild and hope that bumble head Rothlesburger meets Tony Romeo in the SB, wow that would be cool huh. Maybe they could set the record for turnovers in an SB? Or maybe Carolina vs Denver, then you could rag on Manning all the way up to the moment Cam Newton out QBs him?

I'll stick with my prediction............Seattle wins a close game against N.E. Feb. 1

No sir. The black and blue division is based on what defense offers the best defense and hits the hardest. Once upon a time, a LONG time ago, before Sleeping Beauty was ever cast under a spell, the best defensive division was the NFC North.

Now they're probably the 6th or 7th best.

I certainly don't go with the winner of yesterday's contest if that's what you mean.

uh huh. You just conveniently enough make your picks based on who the winner of yesterday's contest is.

Or we could get really wild and hope that bumble head Rothlesburger meets Tony Romeo in the SB, wow that would be cool huh.

Er, that bumblehead Roethlisberger has won 3 AFC Conference and 2 Superbowls. Actually, given that offense rules, last year's SB being the exception that proves the rule, Dallas and Pittsburgh are quite possible SB entries.

What's your prediction swami?

lol. Actually, you read my mind, I was thinking how cool it would be if Dallas and Pittsburgh met up again just this morning.

But I think seedings are too important to make a call yet, so will wait till tomorrow!

Yes the black and blue division has lost it's characteristic toughness that earned it the name in the early 60s, much to my chagrin. I'm hoping they will carry that name with pride once again, and soon. I think they might very well be back in black n blue form before the end of this decade.

Still, the AFC north is not called the black and blue division. That moniker was placed on the NFC central way back and they carry it to this day, even if they haven't really lived up to it consistently. It's still a good motivational tool in that division, I would imagine.

So the AFC north needs to maybe find a moniker of their own instead.

Bing, Google or Wiki "NFL Black and Blue Division"...and only the NFC North is ever mentioned. It earned the name because of the Bear/Lion/Packer/Viking rivalries and their smash mouth style of play...and the name is still used today. Watch ESPN today...and you will hear Cris Berman use the name for the NFC North.

Pretty common knowledge by NFL fans.

But here we go, I can't believe that this is already the end of the regular season. As a Seattle fan I have had a roller-coaster of a ride.  The way they started out with injuries even got me to the point that I didn't think they would go anywhere this year.  But they got it turned around got some players back and started making every team they played very black and blue.

He's from Tampa...and a Buccaneer fan. Evidently if Tampa loses today they will receive the first choice at the best college player. If they win (and it would only be the third time all season) the Jacksonville team would get that first choice.

Buccaneers are winning 10-0. So...the only time it could benefit them to lose...they are deciding to win. Go figure!

Ha! He's going to be miserable for weeks if the Bucs win.

Nah, it doesn't roll off the tongue very well.

The NFC north is not living up to their name of the 'black and blue' division lately, but still they are the 'black and blue' division. They will return to carry that handle proudly. Not to worry. The NFC west has better defense than the AFC north anyway. Pittsburgh was pretty good defensively a few years ago, but lately they are spotty at best. As Palomalu winds down, so does the Steeler defense these days. The best defense in the AFC north is Cincinnati. IMO

Well, sorry, POTP, I was hoping the Lions would beat the Packers, but apparently was not to be. From what I heard they haven't won in GB since '91 or something like that.

I think that Seattle's performance against St. Louis, even though they won, justifies my concern about their offense. I think what happened last year against Denver was a fluke to the extent that Peyton got rattled and didn't perform well at all, not saying that otherwise Denver wins but I think Denver would have given a much better game without that initial fumble and the resulting consequences.

The NFC west has better defense than the AFC north anyway.

The trouble is that the NFC West offenses are so weak that they make their defenses, who mostly play against each other, look better. We're all agreed that Colin Kaepernik just doesn't seem to have the skills necessary to be the guy, Arizona's been playing with 2nd string qbs now for quite some weeks, St. Louis has Sean Hill, not lighting up the league, and Russell Wilson, while he is workmanlike and gets the job done, is no Aaron Rodgers.

So I think that the NFC West defensive stats are probably skewed by the poor offenses in that division, which is going to pad stats. You'd have to look at how these teams did on defense OUTSIDE their division to get a better sense of their quality.

You will note that once again the AFC North is sending three teams to the playoffs. Three teams with 10 or more wins. That doesn't happen by chance.

Steelers get a FG but would have been better if they had gone in for the touchdown. But, Steelers are almost tougher in the 2nd half than they are in the first, so with a ten-point lead going into halftime, it's okay, still don't feel super great about it, but things are looking good.

Cincy does get the ball to start the 3rd qtr, but we'll see how things go.

Well, Le'Veon got taken out, I'd rather the Steelers lose rather than lose Le'Veon. Taking Green out with his fumble doesn't really do anything. Even if they win the game they still look like they might have lost the most critical part of their trio. He was walking so maybe just a knee sprain, but enough probably to render him out of action next week. Better not to risk him until he's back, I don't want this guy messed up, it's not worth it for a playoff win.

So the Steelers have the ball with just under four minutes left. I don't know how meaningful that is, Steelers are trying to hold on I feel like now. I don't even feel like a FG will be enough, their defense, except for turnovers, haven't really been able to hold the Bengals.

Hyperextended knee for Le'Veon. Not as bad as feared.

lol. I actually think that  Dallas has the chance to make hay in the playoffs. As I noted above, I don't think that Seattle's the cat's miaow, and I think that if Seattle has to play Dallas then again despite Seattle's defense, there will be sufficient Dallas points to offset that defense. So where Dallas might score 30 - 40 regularly, she'll score maybe 20 or so, and that is enough I think to beat a very lackluster Seattle offense.

So now we have the playoffs set. It really really sucks that an eleven win AZ team has to go to Carolina for their playoff game. That rule really has to be changed.

    But, here it is:

    Wildcards -

NFC - Lions at Dallas - I don't think the Lions can keep up with Tony Romo at home.
Arizona at Carolina - Arizona is toast.

AFC - Baltimore at Pittsburgh - Baltimore's defense isn't what it once was, and don't think Flacco is all that great.
Cincy at Indy - Andy Dalton is another Peyton Manning--choking if not skilled.

    Divisional -

NFC - Carolina at Seattle - Put a spy on Cam and the game's essentially over.
Dallas at Green Bay - I know it may seem unlikely, but think Romo will rise to the challenge.

AFC - Pittsburgh at New England - Assuming Le'Veon is back. Otherwise NE.
Indy at DenverDenver is relying to much on the running game, I think Andrew Luck wins.

    Conference -

NFC - Dallas at Seattle - for reasons noted above.
AFC - Indy at Pittsburgh - Because they've already done so once, and should be able to contain Luck again.

    Superbowl -

Pittsburgh vs. Dallas - Rome chokes at that point and the Steelers take home their 7th Trophy!
