It's about time someone recognizes the importance of this franchise. From the Committe chair Mark Spatny,

"Star Trek is the first television program I can remember watching as a child, and has always been ahead of its time. Not only have all the franchises promoted inclusiveness and acceptance of all people, and inspired creative thought about space exploration and our future, but the technical innovations sparked by the franchise are incredibly significant to the evolution of television production and also to the communication and computer tools we use in our daily life. We are honored to present this award to a franchise that has made such a lasting contribution to both televsion and our society."

There are a few things in life I could not choose between even with a gun to my head. I couldn't choose between music and reading. And I couldn't choose, not even close, between LOTR or Star Trek as to which is more important to the development of my own personal ethic and beliefs.

Either way, Star Trek deserved this award more so than ANY other recipient I can think of. Well done to the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for their selection, and double, triple, hundredfold kudos to the various casts and characters of its universal franchises, unlimited by either space or time.

I quite agree.  Long overdue.

There is a great deal to be outraged right now: Russian interference, ICE raids in hospital rooms, Eroding LGBTQ rights, Vanishing environmental protections, Puerto Rico still in shambles, Flint still without clean water, unparalleled gun homicides, a compromised Evangelical Church, raising hate crimes, the sabotaging on the Affordable Care Act. - John Pavlovitz Their blood is on YOUR hands.

Not a trekkie but definitely enjoyed most of the Star Trek episodes along with the inspirational and imaginative look into a possible future but in all honesty, doubt seriously that mankind will attain that level of enlightenment or technological achievement before doomsday scenerio takes place. Spock would grudgingly albeit logically agree with me, time is not on our side.
