Koch-Funded Hit Piece Backfires: Shows Medicare for All Would Save 'Whopping $2 Trillion' Over Ten Years While Covering Everybody

"If every major country on Earth can guarantee healthcare to all, and achieve better health outcomes, while spending substantially less per capita than we do, it is absurd for anyone to suggest that the United States cannot do the same."

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) speaks during a health care rally at the 2017 Convention of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee on September 22, 2017 in San Francisco, California. (Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

If the billionaire Koch brothers really want to undermine the economic case for Medicare for All, they have a funny way of showing it.

Judging by the headlines alone, it would appear that the newly published study projecting that Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vt.) widely popular Medicare for All plan would cost $32.6 trillion over the next decade was conducted by an official, neutral body seeking the facts, not pushing an agenda.

"Even if you take the report's headline figures at face value, the picture it paints is that of an enormous bargain. We get to insure every single person in the country...and save everyone from the hell of constantly changing health insurance all while saving money."
—Matt Bruenig, People's Policy Project
Read a bit further, though, and you'll discover that the analysis—released Monday morning—was produced by the George Mason University-based Mercatus Center, which has received millions of dollars in funding from the right-wing billionaires Charles and David Koch, who have previously expressed support for abolishing Medicare and Medicaid entirely.

"This grossly misleading and biased report is the Koch brothers' response to the growing support in our country for a 'Medicare for All' program," Sanders said in response to the study, which was penned by Charles Blahous, who previously worked as a senior economic adviser to former President George W. Bush.

But as Matt Bruenig of the People's Policy Project notes—though absent or buried in much of the initial reportingeven the Koch brothers' numbers, which Sanders says are vastly inflated, demonstrate that the "U.S. could insure 30 million more Americans and virtually eliminate out-of-pocket healthcare expenses" while saving "a whopping $2 trillion" in the process.*

"At first glance, it is strange that the Mercatus center...would publish a report this positive about Medicare for All," writes Bruenig.

"The claim that 'even the Koch organizations say it will save money while covering everyone' provides a useful bit of rhetoric for proponents of the policy," he adds. "But the real game here for Mercatus is to bury the money-saving finding in the report's tables while headlining the incomprehensibly large $32.6 trillion number in order to trick dim reporters into splashing that number everywhere and freaking out."

This "strategy," Bruenig notes, was quite successful.

While most outlets don't even mention the buried cost-saving conclusion of the Mercatus report, Axios—whose headline reads "Bernie's 'Medicare for All' predicted to cost nearly $33 trillion"—includes this line at the very bottom of its piece, in the "worth noting" section: "All told, 'Medicare for All' would actually slightly reduce the total amount we pay for health care."

"Even if you take the report's headline figures at face value, the picture it paints is that of an enormous bargain," Bruenig concludes. "We get to insure every single person in the country, virtually eliminate cost-sharing, and save everyone from the hell of constantly changing health insurance all while saving money. You would have to be a fool to pass that offer up."

In 2016, the United States spent $3.4 trillion on healthcare; projected over ten years—and assuming costs don't rise, as they're expected to—that's $34 trillion. By 2025, the current for-profit healthcare system is expected to cost a staggering $5.5 trillion per year.

Additionally, America spends far more on healthcare per capita than other industrialized nations—most of which have some form of government-funded universal healthcare—and achieves worse outcomes.

These soaring costs are a major reason most Americans—and even a growing number of Republicans—now support a Medicare for All-type system, according to recent surveys.

As Common Dreams reported, Medicare for All is also gaining steam on Capitol Hill, with more than 70 House Democrats joining the newly formed Medicare for All Caucus, which will devote significant energy and resources to studying what it would take to implement a single-payer system in the U.S. and guarantee healthcare to all Americans as a right.

As Sanders said Monday in response to the Mercatus study, "If every major country on Earth can guarantee healthcare to all, and achieve better health outcomes, while spending substantially less per capita than we do, it is absurd for anyone to suggest that the United States cannot do the same."

*CorrectionThis post, based largely on the analysis of Matt Bruenig at the People's Policy Project, initially stated that savings from Medicare for All would be $303 billion over ten years. Bruenig subsequently changed this number due to a miscalculation. The correct number is actually $2 trillion.

Since I am healthy Medicare has been a financial burden. I’ll die according to God’s plan, having finally gotten to laughing with Him about my plans....... Again, Counties hired doctors and nurses, built buildings, and focused on Prevention, back in the day. Lured by contracted services, public /private partnerships inevitably raised the cost beyond all budget reason, and the health care industry was able to wipe out their competition. Competition provides the best service at the lowest possible cost. The health care industry is a cold cruel monster: not satisfied with patients with the ability to pay, they have gone after those who went to county clinics who couldn’t pay, adding a siphon to tax dollars at state and federal levels. Legislators didn’t come up with helping the poor get healthy on their own. It’s not surprising how generous they can be with tax dollars, especially when the health care folks have marketed ideas to the public, manipulating public opinion to support such legislation, unwittingly feeding the industry’s greed. Military health care is a good model, and I don’t mean CHAMPUS which was another siphon that put tax dollars into private hands, increasing costs. I mean the services that are delivered and evaluated on base.
What goes around, comes around.

Wales, you don't have a single original thought in your twisted little noggin, so just stfu please.

There are some adults here that can see the truth in reality.

'I Know This Is Shocking,' Says Sanders, But Trump 'Lying About Medicare for All'

"Not only is Trump lying again, but this guy who proposed and fought for cutting 32 millions Americans from the healthcare they currently have," and pushed for slashing hundreds of billions from Medicaid and Medicare budgets "is acting like he cares about health care for seniors or anyone else."

"I know, I know this shocking," Sanders stated, referring to Trump's untruths and misrepresentations about the Medicare for All bill the senator introduced last year. "I know, I know this shocking," Sanders stated, referring to Trump's untruths and misrepresentations about the Medicare for All bill the senator introduced last year.

In reaction to President Donald Trump's op-ed on Wednesday—titled, "Democrats 'Medicare for All' plan will demolish promises to seniors"—Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) responded in a sensible and honest way by calling the president a liar.

"No, Mr. President. Our proposal would not cut benefits for seniors on Medicare. In fact, we expand benefits."
—Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)
And though Sanders did not actually verbatim say "Trump is a liar," he did declare in a video response posted to social media that  Trump "has lied today" as he pointed out the "19 blatant lies" contained in the president's piece.

"I know, I know this shocking," Sanders states sarcastically in the video, referring to Trump's untruths and misrepresentations about the Medicare for All bill the senator introduced last year.

"I find it doubly ironic," Sanders adds, "that not only is Trump lying again, but this guy who proposed and fought for cutting 32 millions Americans from the healthcare they currently have, by eliminating the affordable care act; this president, who in his last budget proposed a trillion dollar cut in Medicaid and a $500 billion cut in Medicare, this president is now acting like he cares at all about healthcare for seniors or anybody else."

Watch:

While Trump's op-ed is a blatant effort to frighten seniors into thinking an expansion of Medicare would somehow hurt them or their coverage, Sanders countered by saying this assertion is an outright falsehood.

"No, Mr. President," Sanders declared in a statement. "Our proposal would not cut benefits for seniors on Medicare. In fact, we expand benefits. Millions of seniors today cannot afford the dental care, vision care or hearing aids they desperately need because Medicare does not cover these vitally important needs. Our proposal covers them. In addition, Medicare for All would eliminate deductibles and copays for seniors, and significantly lower the cost of prescription drugs."

As Dr. Carol Paris, president of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), tweeted:

Backing up Sanders' charge of blatant falsehoods in a fact-check response on Common Dreams, Robert Weissman, president of Public Citizen, said the president is "dead wrong" and stated that while "lies and deceptions from Trump are nothing new," the president's falsehoods about Sanders' proposal "are new, so it's worth correcting his USA Today column."

Among the "major lies and deceits" by Trump, Weismann documented the following:

  1. Medicare-for-All would not "end Medicare as we know it and take away benefits that seniors have paid for all their lives." The reason it’s called Medicare-for-All is because it would take the existing program and expand it to everyone. Seniors’ benefits would not be taken away – in fact, they would be improved, but everyone else would gain the benefits of Medicare, too.
  2. Medicare-for-All is not going to cost an "astonishing $32.6 trillion" over 10 years, because it will introduce major savings not adequately accounted for in the study Trump cites. Significant savings would come from eliminating vast amounts of paperwork and bureaucracy imposed by the current dysfunctional system, and steeply dropping costs for brand-name pharmaceuticals. But even if Medicare-for-All cost as much as Trump alleges, that amount would be LESS than projections for our current system, which also leaves tens of millions of Americans without coverage.
  3. Trump's claim to have kept his pledge to maintain coverage for people with pre-existing conditions and create new health insurance options is completely deceptive. First, the protections for pre-existing conditions remain in place only because Trump failed to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA.) Meanwhile, a Republican-led lawsuit is challenging the ACA, including guarantee for pre-existing conditions, and there’s a real worry that, especially with Brett Kavanaugh now on the Supreme Court, it might succeed. As for new junk health insurance options Trump has authorized, they offer only the illusion of care, because they permit insurers to skirt the requirement to cover pre-existing conditions.
  4. Medicare-for-All would not "lead to the massive rationing of health care." It is the current system that rations care, based on the ability to pay. One-third of Americans say they had a problem accessing medical care because of cost in the last year. With Medicare-for-All, everyone will be able to see a doctor or access treatment, irrespective of how much money they have.

While denouncing Trump's fearmongering for being exactly that, Sanders said that his Medicare for All proposal "would allow seniors and all Americans to see the doctors they want, not the doctors their insurance companies have a contract with."

Overall, Sanders concluded, a system in which everyone is covered and nobody left out would be a vast improvement over the current "dysfunctional" healthcare system that leaves approximately 30 million people without insurance – a system in which huge profits for insurance companies and drug companies are given priority over providing quality care for every man, woman and child in the country.

"The time is now for the United States to join every other major country on Earth and guarantee health care to every American as a right not a privilege," Sanders concluded, "and Donald Trump, the insurance companies and the drug companies will not stop us."

"...The new study of its costs, from the conservative Mercatus Center, concludes that Medicare-for-all would increase federal spending by almost $33 trillion during the first ten years. To put it in nontechnical terms: That’s a lot. The study notes that “it would be less expensive to the federal government to triple all projected appropriations” and that “doubling all currently projected federal individual and corporate income tax collections would be insufficient to finance the added federal costs of the plan.”

Supporters of the idea impeached the credibility of the findings based on their source, yet a study by the centrist Urban Institute in 2016 found exactly the same thing.

The costs aren’t merely a theoretical matter. Vermont, the home of Bernie Sanders, abandoned a single-payer proposal after the Democratic governor concluded that it wasn’t fiscally sustainable. Despite its Democratic supermajorities, California gave up on a single-payer proposal last year for the same reason — the projected cost was twice as much as the state budget...."

Schumer Rubber Stamps 15 More Right-Wing Judges for Trump

With progressives still mobilized and angrier than ever following Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s successful confirmation to the Supreme Court amid credible sexual assault allegations, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) provided further cause for fury — and added to already deafening calls for new leadership in the Democratic Party — by cutting a deal behind closed doors with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) late Thursday to fast-track 15 more of Trump’s right-wing judges to lifetime federal court positions.

“Make no mistake, today was yet another step in the GOP’s takeover of our courts, stacking the deck against women and families at every level. Immediately following Kavanaugh’s confirmation and all of the energy and despair around it, this deal is especially painful,” NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue said in a statement.

“Through this deal,” Hogue continued, “Democrats allowed Mitch McConnell and Republicans in Congress to fast track 15 more of Donald Trump’s nominees, including David Porter and Mark Norris, whose biased views and extreme anti-choice records indicate they will shape our country in Donald Trump’s brutal image for decades to come.”

Leah Ghostberg@Leahgreenb

There is no reason Democrats should be making any deals with Mitch McConnell to make it easier to confirm more radical conservatives to the courts. Especially not after Kavanaugh. https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/10/11/1803697/-Dear-Chuck-Schumer-Do-not-make-a-deal-for-more-Trump-judges

Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, declared in a statement of her own on Thursday that, with the essential backing of the Democratic leadership, the Senate has become little more than a “rubber stamp for Trump’s takeover of our courts.”

“In recent weeks, people from all corners of our country have risen up and spoken out about how a fair and independent judiciary is essential to protecting our civil and human rights. Yet, today the Senate is jamming through controversial judicial nominees without adequate debate,” Gupta said. “Every single senator should take their responsibility to consider lifetime appointments to our courts more seriously.”

Senate Democrats’ deal with McConnell is the second time in just two months that Schumer has agreed to help the GOP confirm a slew of Trump’s federal court nominees — many of which are hand-picked by the right-wing Federalist Society — with almost zero debate or public scrutiny.

As journalist Eoin Higgins detailed in a lengthy Twitter thread on Thursday, Trump’s latest batch of judges is a heinous and entirely predictable mixture of anti-civil rights, anti-LGBTQ, anti-women appointees who are now set to mold federal law for the next several decades.

While Democrats ostensibly agreed to help the GOP ram through judges in order to allow vulnerable Democrats to return home and campaign through the Nov. 6 midterm elections, progressives argued that Democrats are making a massive political mistake by refusing to use all of the tools at their disposal to combat the right-wing takeover of the judicial system, which will have severe ramifications for women, people of color, the planet, and the poor far into the future.

New Yorker writer Osita Nwanevu was among many commentators suggesting that Democrats easily could have allowed red-state Democrats facing tough re-election campaigns to return home while the rest of the Senate Democratic caucus remained to fight Trump’s nominees, but Schumer opted to fully cave to McConnell instead.

Instead of confirming these judges like this, if Senate Democrats wanted campaign time for vulnerable candidates, couldn't they have....just let those candidates skip out on the nomination process and campaign?

Would voters have cared if Heidi Heitkamp wasn't in Washington to vote on putting Judge Whoever on the bench of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania? Might have even helped Heitkamp, Manchin, etc by distancing them from whatever Dems staying would have done in opposition.

“This period will be long remembered not just for the historic number of judges Trump has been able to confirm, but also because of how passive Democrats were in response,” Demand Justice chief counsel Chris Kang said in a statement. “The progressive grassroots have awoken to the crisis of Trump’s takeover of the courts, and are not going to tolerate this kind of weakness for much longer.”

So at that point, you didn’t have a functioning liberal class. You had a faux liberal class that spoke in the traditional “feel your pain” of liberalism but assiduously served corporate power. That’s Pelosi, that’s Schumer, that’s Obama and that’s Clinton.

Trump is not to blame for our societal destruction, the author of "America: The Farewell Tour" tells Street Roots. The problem is our political and economic systems.

You idiots on the left, INCLUDING YOU SLEAZYRIDER, are so naive. War has existed since the beginning of man an will not end until our earthly existence is no more. Until then it is a necessary preparedness we have to endure. ______ The irony. Here is what is naïve. We spend billions of dollars every year making weapons. If there were no war, we wouldn't spend those billions of dollars. There are quite a few rich guys who don't want to see us stop spending those billions of dollars and have no vested interest in ever ending war, in fact, a good Iraq war is just what they need for their golden parachutes and retirement plans. I agree people will always fight, but there are powerful people among us who like to throw some fuel on that fire ad make sure they fight with our weapons. That is a reality. The military industrial complex has lobbyists whose job it is to scare congressmen into spending more money on military equipment. The literally live for war. While people always fight, we don't need to create a system that helps them, encourages them in fact. That is what we have now.

Why do we spend billions on the military? Because politicians (on both sides) NEED to get re-elected more than anything else on earth. It trumps EVERYTHING. Eventually we're not going to have a middle class. We'll have the destitute and infirm, the military, and the elitists that spend all their time and our money getting re-elected, so they can defend the rights of the common amung us.

At the very least, the dipshits on the right propose to support 'business'. Every dipshit on the left happily shoves every fuckng penny the mic hands them up their ass and turns around and says they're here for the working man. Every one of these dishonest bitches should be drug out and shot.

Nothings going to happen (beyond the crumbs tossed) until you change the system and nothings going to change the system as long as the frogs are making the rules.
