My age, btw. Between him and HW, I've been very contemplative this weekend about life paths.

There is NO rationale as to why many take their own lives. Perhaps an emotional issue.

My age, btw. Between him and HW, I've been very contemplative this weekend about life paths.

Recently I listened to two different podcasts, and I regret my swiss cheese memory is a little fuzzy.   But the first one was discussing the actual demographics of who attempts suicide and who actually succeeds.  This was compiled through records...from hospitals, treatment centers, first responders, etc.   IF I recall correctly, the greatest spike is in the military and in teenagers.   I've also read quite a few studies discussing the negative impact of technology/social media (just mentioned this in Yek's thread). The second podcast was discussing the enlightenment and post modernism which was making the case on how increasing secularism leads to social dysfunctions, among those being increased suicides.  Not just in these demos, but Europe who is ahead of us on that timeline.

I was actually thinking of you MRat, because several on the panel were discussing how "the Dark Ages" and "the Enlightenment" were founded on a myth of sort.  In a nut shell, we have come to believe the Dark Ages was anti intellectual/anti science, particularly focused on the heavy hand of the Catholic Church stifling advancement, when in fact there is significant evidence to the contrary.   My knowledge of history is more general than specific, but I did wonder what you might have added to that discussion.  Heh.

In any case, I have also been considering life paths of late, given the deaths of HW and McCain, both of whom were extraordinary men.  It's so easy to be critical of our politicians, or even judge suicide of notable pepole because it takes little effort, but many of these individuals have done things most of us don't even dream of doing.  What makes some people true survivors who endure to the end, living life to the fullest no matter what happens?  What makes others so despairing that they can't endure, some not even past their teens, in affluent nations?

Maybe he figured out that you can't have a big bang until you pull the trigger?

LOL, such a Marine Corps response! Thanks, dunjuz_not! The number of suicides among teens has increased with the classes teaching it, just like sex education increased the number of teen pregnancies. Weird, but true pandoras boxes. Multicultural studies seems to have an opposite to intent effect, as well, polarizing the country rather than unifying it through understanding. Japan’s attitude toward suicide is one of honor: if you can’t live with the shame......it’s perfectly acceptable to kill yourself......back in the day, you were even ordered to commit Seppuku under certain circumstances. I’m guessing we didn’t watch enough Disney, Lone Ranger, or Howdy Doody.....what my grandchildren play on their IPADs reminds me of The Last Starfighter....not a lot of positive stuff coming for them.
