Dolphins, manatees and even a whale shark have washed up dead on the Gulf of Mexico beaches because of what locals call the Florida "red tide".

Red tide is the name given to the blooms of a species of microorganisms that have a distinct red colour.

The bloom is an annual event in the waters around Florida and it usually breaks up with the wind and tide; but according to local reports, the current bloom has lasted for up to nine months and has killed more marine life than usual.

It is believed a combination of coastal pollution and nutrient-laden water being flushed into the warm waters of the gulf from Lake Okeechobee have caused the particularly severe red tide.

Social media has been inundated with images of dead animals that failed to escape the toxic bloom washing up on the Gulf of Mexico beaches across Florida.

WINK-TV News meteorologist Matt Devitt posted images on his Facebook page of fish, stingrays, manatees, turtles and a whale shark that had died.

That happened one year in Maine.  I had never heard of it before but my friend knew what it was right away.  I plunged right in as usual and she made me get out.  I really don't know what caused it that time.

What would DC say? "Cant be man-made or even made worse by man. That is probably the result of some lying scientists trying to get grant money. Probably not even happening."
"My position concerning God is that of an agnostic. I am convinced that a vivid consciousness of the primary importance of moral principles for the betterment and ennoblement of life does not need the idea of a law-giver, especially a law-giver who works on the basis of reward and punishment." It is obviously 'man made" global warming. That is the liberal excuse for everything that goes wrong. Even if it has been happening for thousands of years.

Red tide has been around for many years. I experienced it first hand about 10 years ago in Texas at South Padre Island. The locals were aware of its existence, so they all wore masks, because it is almost impossible to breathe when red tide is in full bloom. It burns the eyes and the throat. But it has been around since the 1700's with the first recorded case being in 1793. The first "verified" case was in 1844, in Florida and the first massive fish kill was in 1916.

Red tide may have been around for years, but it certainly is exacerbated by fertilizer run off and other high nitrogen pollutants.

I merely pointed out that it has been around for a long time.  It wasn't created by man. Could it be exacerbated by man? Sure it could. Just like anything else can.

Well that, reply #7, was a wholly unsurprisinly stupid remark, considering the source.
